problem with network printers

Hello All,
I have configured a print server in a win2k3 environment, also win2k3 member
server. I am unable to attach printers across subnets. The printer server
can only process print request from client machines residing in the same
network segment as the print server. Does anyone know any possible reasons
for this?
What TCP/IP ports does the HP 4000/4100 printers use?
TIA,
Altria

Does the Print Server Machines itself communicate across the Subnets?

Do the Printers use Network Cards and have their own IP#s? I assume they
do, but there are some situations where a standard printer cable is used and
it really isn't "safe" for me to assume which way you are doing it.

What do you use for a Default Gateway in the network?...a LAN Router,..or a
"firewall" at the system's "edge"?

What do you mean by "unable to attach printers across subnets"? Attach to
what?...what do you even mean by "attach"? Clients go to the Printer Server
machine and not the printers directly, so this comment isn't making any
sense. The Print Server is what "attaches" to the printers and the clients
only send their jobs to the Print Server machine. The Clients don't "attach"
to anything.

we need more information to help. assuming you have two subnets, what are
they?

Hello Guys,
Here is the answers to some of your questions;

Do the Printers use Network Cards and have their own IP#s? I assume they

Yes the print server has a static IP.

I meant to say that clients that reside on a different subnet from the print server are unable to locate the print server itself, which in turn are unable to access the print queues (shares) on server.
Another strange thing is that the print server itself, is unable to display any machines within the domain in Network Places.
Also, I have tried to map a drive from a client machine from a different subnet to the print server, and it tells me that network path/location is inaccessible. But of course within the same subnet I am able to map drives as well as use printers on the print server.
Any suggestions
TIA,
Altria

Please post in "plain text format".

>Yes the print server has a static IP.

I meant the Printers not the Server,...but never mind,...the problem appears
to be with the machine you are using as the printer server. So just forget
about anything printer related,...this is a networking issue with a
particular machine on the network, not a printer issue.

Examine the network settings on this machine. Most likely something is wrong
with them. Compare them to other "static" machines on the same subnet. They
should be identical except for the main IP#.

Thanks guys for the response,
It was actually a WINS issue with multiple registrations.
Thanks,
Altria
