Hello,

I have a problem I would like to understand.

I have an ISB2LAN SOHO router, about 5 years old.
It is capable of handling 10 or 100 Mbit/s.
4 PC's are connected to it, all of them have DLINK network cards.
All PC's have WIN2000.

Symptom at PC 4 : when I set the NIC connection setting to Autonegociate,
apparently this is OK, but actually there IS no network connection. Only at
10 Mbit full duplex, it works.Cable is about 11 m long.

At PC3 , in the beginning, everything was fine; Autonegociation and
connection at 100 MBits/s worked.
But; about a year ago, it started having exactly the same problem as nr 4.
Cable is about 11 m long.

At PC1, almost the same as PC3, except that in most cases I still have
connection at Autonegociate/100 Mbits/s. Cable is very short here.

At PC2, everything as such is fine at Autonegociate/100. Cable is about 5 m
long.
BUT, in most cases, PC2 does not see PC1, and conversely, if they are set
at Autonegociate/100 MBits. I cannot even ping from one to the other (even
if they have each internet connection). Setting both PC's at 10 Mbits/s
solves the problem.

Is there anybody who understands what may happen here?

Thank you
R-ton

Replace the Router.

Thank you David ;

is it typical for a router to have such a "degradation" pattern ? I mean :
working just "half" ?

Best regards,
R-ton

If it can't do auto-negotiation and the two ports don't agree then yes.

Actually David,
I'm not saying it can'to auto-negociation ;
for example let me tell you this "story"
- I'm connected at 10Base T full duplex, no problem
- Then I try to change this into Autonegociation , using the configuration
window of the network card
- at first , the Icon at the bottom right side says "network not connected"
during 1/2 second ; then it says "Lan connection -- Speed 100 Mbits/s"
- then I don't have any acces to internet or the network anymore. I cannot
even communicate with the router itself anymore.
- switching back to 10 Base T Full duplex solves the problem.

Are you sure this is a degradation of the router?

Thank you
r-ton

I think there is a problem with the Ethernet chip-set.
