Problem with Multihoming and IP Aliasing

I have a machine with dual NIC's running w2k3we. The
first NIC has a default gateway and has a number of IP
aliases configured.

My problem is that whenever I add an IP alias to the first
NIC, after rebooting the server, the second NIC does not
come up with an IP address. The IP will come up on the
interface during boot, but after 30 seconds becomes
unavailable. Looking at the system at this time shows the
NIC is using an IP of 0.0.0.0.

Simply "Repairing" the NIC resolves the problem, and
subsequent reboots (when IP's are NOT added) do not have
any problems.

Has anyone else seen this problem and, if so, what is the
fix? Also, what does the "Repair" function do? If I can
script that function I may be able to work around it.

Thanks,
Will

1. Give more specific details
2. Define what you mean by "IP alias".
3. How are the NICs used and what for?
4. What is the subnet situation?

Hi Will,

Thank you for posting!

The Repair operations attempt to refresh the stored data related to the
connection and renew registration with networking services. Use Repair to
issue broadcast renew of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocal (DHCP)
address, flush the address Resolution Protocol (ARP), NetBIOS and domain
name service (DNS)local caches, and reregister with Windows Internet Name
Service (WINS and DNS).

I am not sure if the issue is related with the first NIC. Please send the
Event Viewer logs to me
so that I could find more information about the error.

Step 1: Click Start, click Run, and then type "eventvwr" (without the
quotation
marks), click OK.

Step 2: Right-click Application and select Save Log File As.

Step 3: Save it Application.evt.

Step 4: Repeat step 1 to 3 to save the Security and System event to
Security.evt
and System.evt.

Step 5: Delete all the Application, Security and System log in the Event
Viewer.

Step 6: Restart the computer. When the issue occurs, save the new
Application, Security and System log to three new files and send them to me
in newsgroup.

Also, please let me know the network enviroments for the NICs.

I am looking forward to your reply!

Sincerely,
