Hello,

I am trying create a mapped drive on one server that accesses a shared
folder on another server.
I created a shared folder on one server, then, on the other server, mapped a
drive to access that folder.
I can copy files to the mapped drive by using Windows Explorer, but when I
try to run an SQL Server backup job using the mapped drive as a target I get
an error message that the drive cannot be opened.
I guess this is a security issue. I tried setting network permissions but
was not able to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ragnar

What credentials is the SQL Service account running under?

Thank you Todd,

It is running under Local System, just like most services.
I just took the defaults when I set up SQL Server.
However, I am running the backup jobs with the SQL Server Agent.
I assumed that the jobs are running under the credentials of the
Administrator account, which I used to set up the jobs.

Working on the fly, but to the best of my knowledge the SQL back up and
restore only works with local devices.
Its SOP at my company to pull DB backups to a local drive and then run a
restore.

Thank you Manny,

That is probably the explanation, since I have no problem running NTBACKUP,
as a Windows Scheduled event, to copy a file to the mapped drive.

I ended up backing up to a local drive, then running NTBACKUP to copy the
backup file to the mapped drive.
