Problem with Malicious calls + broadband

I have a slight problem.....

Due to some idiot making threatening calls to the phoneline which I use for
broadband/work I have to change my phone number.

BT will change the number fine, they have said this will happen around the
17th May. I've spoken to Freeserve/Wanadoo who've said all they can do is
cancel my account on the old phone number and get me a new account on the
new one. *BUT* it could take up to 10 days, I can't live without my
broadband connection for that long. I'm also worried that they are going to
put me on one of these wanadoo accounts with DL limits.

Can anyone give me any idea as to what is the best solution? If there is one
at all?

Instaed of changing your number why not get BT's "choose to refuse" or
"anonymous caller reject" service, whichever is appropriate for you.

BT changing your telephone number should not make any difference to
Wanadoo - I assume your BT account number isn't changing, just the phone
number attached to it..

I am surprised by this - I am sure we had a line renumbered by BT at
one site - and the ADSL carried on working fine. The circuit number
as far as BT were concerned didn't change.

Freeserve might be assuming that your line is being ceased and then
re-provided. In practice I don't think this is what BT do for a
simple re-number.

Sorry, I forgot to say. The calls are comming from mainland europe. BT said
they cannot block them at all from outside the UK.

It can cause problems, as at some obscure level the DSL service is 'tied' to
the telephone number.

Have had a couple of instances where the enduser has changed their number &
after a prolonged period of time (6-9 months, just long enough to feel safe)
the DSL service has been ceased, as the line it was provided on no longer
exists.

There is no physical reason for this, it's just the way the
software/database has been set up.....

Mike,
You can apply for a renumber from BT without losing any broadband
service. The only time you will lose your connection is if a "stop" or
"cease" is placed on your line. A renumber of a line does not
constitute either of the above, it only requires a "change" order by
the order processor. All you need to do is advise your ISP of the new
number for accounting purposes

Why do you have to change your phone number?

I was being harassed by a Mr Gomeche (do a google on Ian Gomeche). I called
BT and they gave me this service, basically even if the called withholds
there number, you can block them from calling you.

Think about it mate - saves you losing customers by changing your number and
saves the hassle of messing around the BB.

I think the poster indicated that these calls were coming from
overseas and CLI was not available. CTR/ACR would not work in this
situation.
