Problem connecting to Virgin.net - please please help!

I've signed up to Virgin's ADSL service but my D-Link 604+ reports an
"Auth fail" message despite knowing that my login details are
*definitely* correct.

The BT test line settings show 'connected' but Virgin's test line and
it's own ADSL service connection just says 'auth fail'. D-Link have
only suggested upgrading the firmware which I've done, the site who
sold me the gear can understandably not help very much and Virgin are
only going to run tests on the line - otherwise they'll pass it to BT
next and leave me to suffer.

I've got the standard settings running on my web-based manager for the
router and also tried many suggested variations.. no joy. I've also
tried both hard and soft resets on the router. The diagnostics show
very good line speeds on the actual line (albiet reporting Line Error
-> ADSL line -> CRC errors -> 2 if that could be responsible).

I have a my PC running with a Realtek ethernet card, a D-Link 510
wireless card through a D-Link 604+ router into my newly-activated
ADSL socket. I'm running XP from a fresh install (the third in two
days thanks to trying to solve this problem) so you can assume I have
standard settings running.

Any ideas at all? I'm absolutely desperate and stuck with nothing from
the primary places that should help me

Any help appreciated..

Lee

worth visiting a neighbour with ADSL to check your D-Link will connect
to their service, and/or try their kit on your line ? I have a spare
router which I'd happily loan, but it will take a while to post, and
in any case, is on loan to someone else until Friday. Peter M.
