Problem Connecting to Virgin Broadband

Signed up with virgin a couple of weeks back, they said I should be
connected and up and running last wednesday (27th Oct). But I cannot get
my modem to connect to their service.

It is a d-link G604T and I am sure I have got everything configured
correctly. The modem will connect to <bt_test@startup_domain> and
<bt_test_user@startup_domain> but will not connect to
<(E-Mail Removed)> or my account <(E-Mail Removed)>

I managed to speak to their technical support people a couple of times
and they said they would test the line and get back to me, but I haven't
heard anything.

I have also sent three emails to their technical support email address
and have had zero replies.

I don't really know what to try next, does anyone have any pearls of
wisdom that they can share with me to get the connection working?

Failing that - now that I can connect to the two BT test connections
(i.e the ADSL is physically switched on) is it easy (and preferably
free) to migrate to a different sevice provider so that I can give
virgin two fingers? They don't seem to be interested in my 18 quid a
month after all!

Any advice gratefully received

Rob

If you can't connect to the @adsl.virgin.net that either the line still
hasn't been configured properly (the virtual path hasn't been set up) or (&
this is possible) you have not been jumpered up to the the correct pair on
the DSLAM.

No matter which one it is, you can not do anything, unless you are a BT
engineeer, so you are reliant on the Virgin customer support staff I'm
afraid...

If you can connect to the BT test site and not to the Virgin one it would
seem to be some setting is not configured correctly. I presume the modem is
not supplied by Virgin, hence not supported.

I got these manual settings from Virgin support. Hopefully of some use to
you.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer any technical support for any ADSL
modem other than the Alcatel Speedtouch Modem that can be bought through our
website.

However, these are typical ADSL settings, as advised by independent sites,
for configuring ADSL connections in the UK. This information is supplied "as
is" for those customers wishing to manually set up their connections and for
those without a Virgin.net recommended modem.

Typical settings for ADSL in the UK are as follows:
VPI = 0
VCI = 38
ADSL Modulation Auto, then try G.DMT, then try ANSI T1.413
Encapsulation Mode PPP over ATM (PPPoA - RFC2364) VC-MUX
Service name Home 500
Authentication CHAP
MTU = 1458
Receive Window (RWIN)

The formula for finding your "ideal" RWIN, is to take your latency (average
ping time in ms x 1.5), multiply that by your advertised (download) speed,
and divide that by 8.

Note: If setting RWIN below 8192, try using even multiples of MSS.

Primary DNS : 194.168.4.100
Secondary DNS: 194.168.8.100

Domain Name: virgin.net

I hope this is enough information to get you connected, if you need any
further information you may wish to read through our FAQ site at:

Thanks for looking up the settings, but I am almost 100% sure that I
have got all these correct (I have also checked and double checked my
username and password many times already!)

If anyone out there has successfully connected to virgin with a d-link
modem (G604T or similar) then I would be interested in knowing the exact
settings used as a confidence check comparison, but I have a feeling the
problem is not at my end...
