I haven't worked with SMB outside of a domain environment, but I think you
might have some sort of WINS issue at work.
As a lark, try editing the LMHOSTS file on your win98 box, forcing the
assignment of the IP address of the unix box to the netbios name
(servername) you've assigned to the smb share. THis might work better for
you, but isn't a long term solution to the problem.
