Hello Everyone, I have been trying to connect my linux box with my earthlink DSL. Herebelow, I will try to explain each step I went through as elaborate as possible so that you all can get clear picture of what I did. But no luck. This is the message I have been getting 15-20sec after I type 'adsl-start: /sbin/adsl-start: line 217: 5564 terminated $connect "$@" >/dev/nu 11 2>&1 Following are the steps I did so far: ---------------------------------- 1) After I typed "adsl-setup", it came as this: Welcome to the ADSL setup...The following DSL config was found on your system: Device: Name ppp0 DSLppp0 ppp1 DSLppp1 ppp3 DSLppp3 ppp3 DSLppp3 notice: ppp3 was mentioned twice, It's not a typo. It exactly the way it showed on the screen which is rather confusing to me. Please enter the device if you want to config the present DSL config(default ppp0) or enter 'n' if you want to create a new one: I chose the default which is ppp0 ------------------------------------------ 2)Enter your login name : here I entered only the name not after the @ part of my e-mail address. For Example: I entered 'newoxygenlife' , NOT '@yahoo.com'. I'm not sure if that would make any difference or not. As i went through some newsgroups, different people commented totally different ways on this issue. Couple of people suggested to enter 'newoxygenlife', while the rest suggested to enter the whole e-mail address.Ovbiously it made me confused and I chose to enter the 'newoxygenlife' only. -------------------------------------------- 3)Enter the Ethernet interface connected to the ADSL modem. For solaris it's likely to be something like /dev/hme0. For Linux, it will be ethX, where 'X' is a number.(default eth0): I went for default(eth0) here as well. -------------------------------------------- 4)Do you want the link to come up on demand, or stay up continuously? For your link to stay up permanently, enter 'no' NOTE: Demand activated links do not interact well with dynamic IP addresses. You may have some problems with demand activated links. Enter the demand value(default no): I went for default here too. I don't have dynamic IP address(which is extra $15). Therefore, I chose 'no' . ------------------------------------------ 5)DNS Please enter the IP address of your ISP's primary DNS server. If your ISP claims that 'the server will provide dynamic DNS addresse', enter 'server' (all lower-case) here. if you just press enter, I will assume you know what you are doing and not modify you DNS setup. Enter the DNS information here:205.65.186.182 <- this is not the real IP though, I used here only example. Please enter the IP address ......for secondary DNS:205.65.186.183<-again this is an example. Please note that i tried both ways; typing 'server' and also typing the DNS IP address(I had to call my ISP and get this IP address). ---------------------------------------------------- 6)PASSWORD Please enter your password: I entered the password for my e-mail address. Please re-enter your password: Entered again. ------------------------------------------------- 7)USERCTRL Please enter 'yes'(twho letters, lower case) if you want to allow normal user to start or stop DSL connection: I chose 'yes' --------------------------------------------- 8)Firewalling 0- no firewall 1- standalone 2- masquerade I chose here 0 for my own reason. But I think it's changeable later on. ---------------------------------------------- 9)Start this connection at boot time Do you want to start this conection at boot time? Please enter no or yes: I chose 'no' --------------------------------------------------- 10)Here is the summary of what I have entered: Ethernet interface: eth0 User name : newoxygenlife Activate on demand: No Primary DNS : 205.65.186.182 Secondary DNS : 205.65.186.183 Firewalling : None User control : yes Accept this setting and adjust config(y/n)? I pressed 'y'. --------------------------------------------- Then I typed 'adsl-start' , after may be 15-20 seconds, here is the output: '/sbin/adsl-start: line 217: 5564 terminated $connect "$@" >/dev/nu 11 2>&1 The above line has been very frustrating for last several days. I checked my cable, switched different cable too, no luck so far. But one thing I have noticed, in each session each time I try to start ADSL, the number after 217: (which is here 5564) keeps going up. I have been feeling very helpless on this issue. Any type of help would be appreciated. thank you. ZaK |

There are various adsl-setup scripts and such a script can vary according to the source from which it is obtained. > Please enter the device if you want to config the present DSL > config(default ppp0) or enter 'n' if you want to create a new one: > I chose the default which is ppp0 Usually that would be correct. > ------------------------------------------ > 2)Enter your login name : > here I entered only the name not after the @ part of my e-mail > address. That's the reverse of what I would expect. In particular, the /dev/nu11 is really bad! The $connect is a environmental variable, likely containing the name of a dial-in script that doesn't work, for whatever reason. > The above line has been very frustrating for last several days. At the same time I would admit my stupidity on 'dynamic' and 'static' IP addresses. Even though I know the difference, but I guess I blanked out at that time. Yes, you are correct on what you had thought as 'static' address should be $15 more than the dynamic address. I'm sorry for making it confusing. As you have guessed that I hand copied the 'adsl-start' and 'adsl-setup' scripts, you are correct on that as well. As far as typos, I would say English is not my first language and I'm new with linux too(eagerly want to learn though). So, I apologise for the confusion. Besides, in places where you saw "......." inside my scripts, I just omitted few words there thinking those would not be needed with the context. My problem I have been facing still remains. What should I do now? As you indicated that '/dev/nu11' is really bad, what should I do on this regard? Thanks again for your kind help. Zak |

Well, if I'm not wrong, you're using RP-PPPoE. What I understand, you
don't even need that adsl-setup script though it worked pretty well with my settings. I used it for quite long in 20 something pcs. I won't say, the script idiotic cause, you see here ... # Start the connection in the background unless we're debugging if [ "$DEBUG" != "" ] ; then $CONNECT "$@" exit 0 fi $CONNECT "$@" > /dev/null 2>&1 & CONNECT_PID=$! Okay, please dive into the file pppoe.conf and enter the required information there. That will help you understanding the whole mechanism and the trouble caused. And here is the help file written by author himself. Please go through. 1. Set up your Ethernet hardware -------------------------------- First, make sure the Ethernet card you intend to use with the modem is visible to the Linux kernel. Just how to do this is beyond the scope of this document. However, if the card is the only Ethernet card in the system, executing: ifconfig eth0 should display something like this: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:67:62:31 4plust some more lines. Your HWaddr will be different. As long as you see the HWaddr line, your card should be working. DO NOT assign an IP address to the Ethernet card. DO NOT configure the card to come up at boot time. 3. Edit pap-secrets ------------------- Edit the "pap-secrets" file, inserting your proper user-ID and password. Install the file (or copy the relevant lines) to /etc/ppp/pap-secrets. Your ISP may use CHAP authentication. In this case, add the line to /etc/ppp/chap-secrets. 4. Edit /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf ----------------------------- The file /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf contains configuration information for the ADSL connection. You need to edit the following items: - Change ETH=eth1 to the correct Ethernet device for your modem. - Change USER=(E-Mail Removed) to your proper ADSL user-ID. Don't edit any of the other settings unless you're an expert. 5. Set up DNS ------------- If you are using DNS servers supplied by your ISP, edit the file /etc/resolv.conf to contain these lines: nameserver ip_addr_of_first_dns_server nameserver ip_addr_of_second_dns_server For example: nameserver 204.101.251.1 nameserver 204.101.251.2 6. Firewall your machine ------------------------ MAKE SURE YOU FIREWALL YOUR MACHINE. A sample firewall script is given in the shell script "firewall" To install the script: a) Copy it to /etc/rc.d/init.d/firewall b) Type: chkconfig firewall on c) Start the firewall: sh /etc/rc.d/init.d/firewall start (The above procedure works ONLY on Red Hat-like systems.) You may want to tweak the script somewhat. 7. Bring up the connection at boot time --------------------------------------- On a Red Hat system, the installation procedure should have installed a script called /etc/rc.d/init.d/adsl. To bring up the connection at boot time, just type this command as root: chkconfig --add adsl On non-Red-Hat systems, add this line to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local: /usr/sbin/adsl-start 8. Configure LAN Hosts ---------------------- If you have a LAN behind the firewall, you have to lower the TCP maximum segment size from the normal 1460 to 1452 (or better, 1412.) You have two options: Either set the MTU of all the interfaces on other hosts on the LAN to 1452, or use the "-m 1412" option to pppoe. The "-m" option for pppoe is far simpler and makes it easier to add hosts to the LAN, but consumes some extra CPU time. If you want to manually configure the LAN hosts, here's how: In Linux, use: "ifconfig eth0 mtu 1452". For best results, put this in an /etc/rc.d/rc.local script. For Windows, machines, see http://lan.cns.ksu.edu/OS/WIN95/slip95.htm. Set the MaxMTU to 1452. ------------------------ When everything fails, just have a peek into the actual PPPOE forum here at http://www.voy.com/41165/ Have a great connectivity! -- raqueeb hassan congo (drc) |

First you need to post exact copies of messages, not hand-copies. I said /dev/nu11 is really bad because the number 1 is not the letter l. But I understand that the visual distinction could be subtle for someone whose native language is not English. I suspect that your hand-copy changed CONNECT to the lower-case connect too. These are examples of why you should not hand-copy. The only ADSL scripts I have here are for rp-pppoe and I'm guessing the one you have is not. Even given all the typos, differences appear to exist. So it would help if you could provide a link (URL) for whatever package the scripts come from. I personally would rather have a link to avoid posting the entire script when it is big - as it seems to be. The rp-pppoe script adsl-start runs the script adsl-connect to dial out and connect to the ISP. That script runs yet another script, specified on the adsl-start script, or /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf if there is none on the command line, and then runs the command to actually start the PPPoE session. The problem appears to me to be a failure to dial-out, or to connect after dial-out, but the single message from adsl-start about "line 217" isn't enough for me to say why. You might check for an option to force more verbose debugging messages. > Thanks again for your kind help. Actually I waited to see whether someone else would post who *knew* what is causing the problem you have. I haven't ever done PPPoE ADSL, although I do know PPP reasonably well and understand PPPoE enough to be dangerous. One other thing. Please respond to the last reply posted and not your original post. It's easier all the way around. -- Clifford Kite Email: "echo xvgr_yvahk-(E-Mail Removed)|rot13" PPP-Q&A links, downloads: http://ckite.no-ip.net/ /* In my book, the first poster to resort to personal abuse in a Usenet debate loses by default. - Rod Smith */ |

Ghastly reasoning although the result should work: the MSS is not the MTU, it is the MTU minus 40. For PPPoE you *should* be able to set the MTU to 1492 for all LAN Ethernet interfaces so that the MSS of those interfaces is 1452 and have things work. Now I don't know whether there really are instances when the MSS actually must be 1412, for reasons unknown to me, or whether it's *all* misinformation stemming from this. > If you want to manually configure the LAN hosts, here's how: > In Linux, use: "ifconfig eth0 mtu 1452". My Slackware does but it's my impression that some distributions aren't structured that way. The way "7. Bring up ..." above reads it looks like RH may be one. > For Windows, machines, see http://lan.cns.ksu.edu/OS/WIN95/slip95.htm. > Set the MaxMTU to 1452. > ------------------------ > When everything fails, just have a peek into the actual PPPOE forum > here at http://www.voy.com/41165/ I'll try to do that, thanks. It might eventually clear the MTU/MSS fog away. -- Clifford Kite Email: "echo xvgr_yvahk-(E-Mail Removed)|rot13" PPP-Q&A links, downloads: http://ckite.no-ip.net/ /* Those who can't write, write manuals. */ |
