Hi,
I have a ServerIronXL load balancer and in order to configure it, I
have to connect to it through the serial port on it. This equiptment
is installed at my colocation facility, so in order to configure this,
I brough my laptop over there. However, my laptop doesn't have a
serial port. I used one of those RJ45 LAN to serial cables, but I
have no clue how to connect to the Serveriron.

The details in the instructions say to connect using the following
info:

bits per second: 9600
Data bits: 8
Parity: none
stop bits: 1
flow control: none

I plugged in the cable to my LAN port on my latop and then to the
serial port on the load balancer and used Hyperterminal to try to
connect but it didn't work. How do I connect? Should I be attempting
to connect through my COM port on m laptop or through TCP/IP? The
loadbalancer doesn't have any IPs or anything preset from the factory
so I dont think I can even use the TCP/IP.

One person said just take the load balancer home and hook it up to my
home computer with a direct serial-to-serial cable and just use COM1
or COM2 port...quick and easy.

Is that my only solution or was I doing it wrong with the
LAN-to-Serial? Wondering if there is a special way to connect to it
using a cable like this. Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Gabriel

BOFH excuse #249: The cause of the problem is: Program load too heavy
for processor to lift.

What brand/model ethernet to serial converter do you have? To connect, I
imagine you have to telnet to the converter's IP.

Do its docs say how to have it get (dhcp) or set (static) IP on its
ethernet end? I suspect that maybe you just got a cable adapter (like for
terminal or modem on Cisco router) instead of an actual ethernet to serial
converter device.

I think you need more than a cable adapter with just wires in it. Do a
web search for "rj45 ethernet to serial". Make sure the device can do
"ethernet to serial" (serial to ethernet may just be software for serial
end).

Gabriel,
I'm going to be really basic here and ask a really stupid question. Are
you sure that it is a RS232 to LAN Adaptor? Could it be just one of those
RJ45 to 9D adaptors that are used commonly to connect PCs to the serial
port of Cisco devices?
Do you have the make and model of this adaptor?

Regards
Bruce.

I am running SuSe 9.1 64-bit version on my servers...

As for the cable, yes, it is just a RJ45 to 9D adapter. Do I actually
need an adapter device? I dont recall the brand, it was just some
generic cable.

I did buy a femail 9D serial plug that I can set the pinouts on myself
and plug it into a cat5/RJ45 cable, but even then, I still dont know
exactly how I would connect to it. If there is a lan to serial
converter device that I would connect to over TCP/IP, that would make
a lot more sense.

the instructions in the manual only mention a serial-to-serial
connections. I went out to my colo facility today and picked up the
ServerIron and hooked it up to my PC with a serial-to-serial cable and
it connected instantly with Hypertermal (super easy).

Just wondering if an actual lan-to-serial conversion device is what
the doctored order...?

Gabriel

Gabriel,
Glad to hear you solved your immediate problem.
There are a couple of ways you can add a serial port to your laptop:
1) PCCARD/PCMCIA Serial adaptor, if you have a spare Slot, though these
are a bit on the expensive side.
2) USB to Serial adaptor.
3) A Network to serial adaptor, these can vary in cost and ability, what
you may need to find is a single port terminal (or term) server. Though
these are usually in the other configuration (Terminal connected to
RS232, talking to server on the network). Raritan make a device to talk
to servers with serial ports over the network, but this is a multiport
device (so again, expensive), they may have a single port device.

Regards
Bruce.
