Problem connecting client to DNS server

I have setup a DNS server running Windows 2003 Server OS,
and bascially have taken the defaults for setup. In
trying to connect a client to the domain, I get an error
message that states that the client cannot find the
server. I have setup the client on the servers active
directory computers area.

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but I cannot ping the
server from the client using the servers IP address.
However I'm able to ping the client from the server, thus
I know the connection and route are there. Is there some
setting that I have to change to get these clients to
recognize the server, or vise versa.

can you ping the server by ip? if not, check the connection; if yes, can you
ping it by name? if not, check the insetting.

If you cannot ping the server by IP address, you have a routing problem.
If everything is physically connected, check the client and server IP
addresses and subnet masks. They should be in the same IP subnet.

While you are checking IP settings, check that the client's DNS server
setting is the IP address of the server.
