Problem connecting: Bellsouth

Ok, I just recently purchases an Alcatel SpeedTouch Home DSL Modem, a
Dell Truemobile 2300 and some D-Link wireless cards (DWL-G520). I am
having some difficulty getting it all to work.

I already had Bellsouth ADSL setup via a USB modem. Plugged in the
SpeedTouch today and it worked great. Installed the network card, and
it appeared to work great because it found my neighbor's wireless
network. Started going through the setup process for the dell
router and came across a problem. It asked me to disconnect the
Ethernet cable from the computer (the one coming from the modem), and
connect it to the router. Well, when I disconnect the cable, I lose
my connection.(A window pops up immediately informing me that the
connection was dropped) It would seem this is a Bellsouth issue, but
I can't find any help.

THe 'sync' light on the modem stays solid, so I've still got sync.
The "Internet" light on the dell lights up and stays solid, but while
it is testing itself via the install software, it can't detect a valid
Internet connection.

Has anyone dealt with this issue before?

Thanks!

-Craig

When using a router to connect to the Internet, you need to configure it.
Read the manual that came with the router to get its address and then access
it through your browser.
Likely need to configure for PPPoE and enter userid and password etc.

Ok, nevermind guys.

I kept at it and finally got it all straightened out at 1:30am.

For anyone that might be having similar problems, here is what I did:

1. I reset the modem as outlined in the manual. It was not responding
when I used its 'standard' address of 10.0.0.138. Once I reset it, it
was there. I think it was actually working ok, but just using a
different address.

2. Gave up on the setup instructions from Dell. Went to its web
interface and started messing around. Stumbled across the section
where it specifies what type of connection you are using. It was
automatically configured to use a cable modem it seems. I changed
this to "PPoE" and everything started working great!

Connections look great so far. With my new modem, I've gone from DSL
speeds of 4.0 Mbps to 10.0 Mbps. My wireless network is sitting at a
steady 54.0 Mbps vs. my old 10.0 Mbps.

So far so good!

"I changed this to "PPoE" and everything started working great!"

oh- and forgot to add. In the PPoE section, I had to specify my
e-mail address and password.
