Problem with 3COM 3C509 NIC

I installed a 3COM ISA 3C5099B-TPO card into an old 486
based computer running Windows 98. I downloaded the latest
drivers and followed the instructions for a custom
installation since my computer does not have plug-and-play
BIOS. I disabled plug-and-play on the card. The
installation appeared to progress smoothly. Both the NIC
test and the network test passed in the 3COM wizard during
installation. However, after the install was complete and
the computer rebooted, the network test under the 3COM NIC
diagnostic program fails saying that "no packets
returned". I have the other end of the cable connected to
a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router, which works with
several other devices. I've tried the cable with other
computers, and it works fine. Needless to say, the
computer with the 3C509B isn't connecting to the network.
The LEDs on the router, which indicate an active
connection, don't come come on when the computer is
powered on, though they will flash during the network
test. Windows Device Manager shows that the 3C509B is
installed and functioning. I've tried removing and
reinstalling the drivers 3-5 times.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get this card running?
Are these symptoms of a setup problem or does it look like
I have a bad card?

The only other clue of a problem I can see is that the
Window System Information utility shows the the following
drivers are not loaded for the 3C509 card: tcaatdi.inf and
w95el5x9.inf. How do I get these to load?

I'd guess a bad card, especially if Device Manager says it's configured
correctly. Remember that Device Manager doesn't really test hardware, all
it does is check to make sure that the driver can see the resources it's
supposed to.

You could put a head of cabbage inside your system (assuming, of course, you
had the right drivers <G>) and as long as the drivers for it could see any
I/O or IRQ resources it had been assigned, Device Manager would say it was
OK. :-)
