I'm trying to backup the second computer to a partition on the first
computer using XP Pro on both via a switch. The internet connection is
via the first computer and it works. When I try to write the backup
file to the first computer it tells me that I don't have the right
privileges.

I checked in my power user book but it only talks about auditing
privileges - not setting them.

Can anybody give advice?

Colin

On your First PC right click the HDD you want to write to and select
properties, then the sharing tab and ensure that " Share this drive on
the network" and "Allow network users to change files" is ticked.

Thanks.

These two computers are at a friends house. I'm familiar with that
procedure and I thought that I'd done it, but I'll certainly give it a
try. It's the only way forward that I've got.

If you can give the exact error message it would help. I have found an
anomaly in accessing file shares with XP if you are using the Windows
firewall.

If you are getting a message have been getting the message along the lines
of

"Workgroup not accessible. You may not have permission to access..."

The do a Google search for "Workgroup not accessible - fixed" and there is a
solution.

It must have been operator error. I went through the network procedure
again and it worked.

Many thanks.

Just a word of warning. the problem I identified depended on the order in
which computers booted up. The first became the master NETBIOS server. I had
the situation where sometimes I could access the shares and other times I
couldn't. I have three computers, two laptops and a desktop. It infuriated
me for several months until I really set aside a day to diagnose it. The
problem does not exist it you use a firewall that disables the Windows
Firewall. At the time I was using Kerio 2.5 which does not recognise the
Windows firewall and I was in effect using both.

Regards
John
