Private network

Please be patient with me. I am new to Linux. I have 2 computers. One
windows xp machine with 2 ethernet networkcards.
One ethernetcard is connected using adsl with internet
Second card is connected to second computer

On this second computer i have installed Linux Red Hat 9.

At the moment the Linux machine is not directly connected to internet .
Later I want to configure internet through the windows machine (so first
over a private network from Linux to windows, then access internet there. I
have no idea yet how to do that, but that's or later concern. First I like
to connect the 2 machines.

Linux is installed and starts ok. I want to configure the network. When I
look in the system tools there is a "Network Device Control", which is
empty. First i have to install a device. The only place to install the
device is the 'Internet configuration Wizard' (but there is no direct
internet connection). I can use this by selecting Ethernet connection and
other ethernet card. 3com501 is detected and selected, device eth0, irq
unknown to let it detect. This way i can install the device. It is inactive.
I can activate it here or in network device control both same result:
"Cannot activate network device eth0"

Restarting computer with errormessage:
Bringing up interface eth0: 3c501 device eth0 does not seem to be present,
delaying initialisation.

I had installed both machines with windows xp then the connection worked.

It seems i have selected the wrong adapter, but i believe it must be
correct. Is there some other reason for this message.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Any one?

Thanks,

Geert-Jan

Linux has always detected and initialized my ethernet card. I havnt
seen a case in recent times where an ethernet card is not detected by
linux. See if the drivers for your card are available for linux.

That means your ethernet card is working properly.

Try running the hardware detection tool, kudzu. I dont know much about it,
how to start it, try from the command line. Others may be able to give exact
location.

Hi,

what does lspci returns? It should show your two cards and provide their
chip name. Check if the right modules are loaded for both cards with lsmod
(what kernel version are you running?).

Hi Thomas,

Thank you very much for your answer.

I didn't know that command (I told you i am a beginner).
lspci on the commandline:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge

00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge (rev

00:04.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA (rev 02)
00:04.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)

Ah, 3C905B. So it IS a wrong driver.

2.4.20.8

U have been puzzling over the whole situation. Reformatted the linux
harddisk. Same problem. In Internet configuration wizard selected "3com
3C590/3c595/3c90x/3c980" then error "determining ip information for rth0:
failed"

Deleted them in Internet configuration wizard.

Am looking at www.3com.com for updated drivers.
Downloading 3c90x-102.tar.gz that was tested for RedHat 7.1 and kernel
2.4.2-2
Extracted the file.

I runned the file 'install3c90x' and started Internet configuration wizard.
Changed modules.conf to add: alias eth0 3c90x

In lsmod one of the lines read:
3c59x 30704 1

There's a warning:
"eth0 has an alias in module 3c90x in modules.conf, instead of currently
loaded module 3c95x"

There IS some change, but it still doesn't work. How can I change that
currectly loaded module?
I AM doing something wrong.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Geert-Jan

I did that. Thanks. See my mail to Thomas

Right.

I am not sure either. Will try a couple of things and then, if it doesn't
work return to my manuals. I cannot seem to get it right. I am doing
something wrong, but cannot find it.

Thank you very much for your answer.

At a command prompt (x console) just type "neat" and get the "full"
net config gui tool. It's the same as redhat-config-network -- but
shorter

If you don't have them I strongly suggest you get the reference and
customization guides for RH9 as they provide the best documentation
for config files and locations when you need to look at the "real"
setup info in the text files. There are several of them and they are
scattered about.

BTW, the nic module/driver will be loaded automatically in ifup as the
system boots. That's the message you see, "Bringing up eth0 ...".
That's also where the error message is coming from -- the correct
module for the nic is not loading and initializing properly. If you
look in the scripts (/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/network-functions
?) it's the function "is_available".

Agree with the comments above. I'm not really familiar with RedHat config
tools but I would use them as much as possible.

It seems 3c59x is the right module, you should remove the line from
module.conf to get rid of the message and the kernel should automatically
load it

You could then check the result of "ifconfig -a". If the card is detected,
it should show an entry for eth0.
