I would like to set up my Win2000 laptop so that when I plug in an
Ethernet cable, traffic flow will switch to the wired interface, even
when the wireless connection (Orinoco PC Card and AP) is still good.
Although I can force this usage manually by disabling the radio, I was
hoping I could make it happen automagically by statically configuring
the Interface Metric deep in the properties of the two Local Area
Connections.
No such luck; I have tried various combinations, with either the WiFi or
Ethernet having a higher metric, but it doesn't seem to help. It looks
like what is happening is that the protocol stack simply keeps using the
old interface when a new one is brought online (i.e., plug in the
Ethernet cable), until the old one is disabled, then it will happily
switch to the remaining interface.
I verified via the route command that the metrics I plugged in were
reflected in the routing table.
The laptop and the computers it uses here have only TCP/IP, File-Print
Share, and Client for Microsoft networks enabled.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
George Marshall
