Printing via LAN fails

I'm seeking to print remotely, i.e. from my laptop to the printer
attached to my desktop. Everything else is working (ssh, sftp). Both are
running Debian Sid.

I can print files by copying them to the desktop and running lpr
remotely but I'd prefer to do it transparently.

I've made entries for the laptop in /etc/hosts.lpd on arcadia (desktop).

I've tried rlpr but it says it cannot connect to the desktop (arcadia)
and asks about /etc/hosts.lpd.

I also made /etc/printcap on the laptop, as follows:

#
# This file was generated by /usr/sbin/magicfilterconfig.
#
lp|Kyocera|Kyocera:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/Kyocera:rm=arcadia:rp=Kyocera:lpr_bounce:\
:shw#80l#72x#1440:mx#0:\
:if=/etc/magicfilter/ljet4l-filter:\
:af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

Attempts to print say "connection to arcadia is down".

Not sure what to try next. Should I install NFS (seems like over-kill)?
(I really don't want to use CUPS, btw.)

Does a 'lpd' daemon run on arcadia? Is 'arcadia' configured with a
spooler 'Kyocera'?

Yes to both. And printing with the equivalent /etc/printcap works fine
on arcadia.

Did you add the name of the laptop to /etc/hosts.equiv ?
IIRC adding the laptop name to /etc/hosts.lpd is not enough.

No, I've found the problem after more googling. Debian adds the -s
switch to lpd by default. Removing this has made things work.

But thanks for your help.
