Printing on shared Windows Printer

Hi,

I am new to Linux (using RH v9 now) and I must say it's the coolest thing
since slice bread - rocks windows twice over. I decided, to use it as a
workstation at the office but the office is running on a windows 2000
network and I configure Linux to connect to the shared office printer which
has the print drivers for it but whenever I send a job to the printer there
is no output on the printer, neither logical or physical. Is this possible
to do? The printer is on a windows 2000 AD domain controller and I gave
Linux the username and password to supply when printing (the user is in the
print operators group of the windows domain). Any ideas?

Thanks for your help - Jamie

Do you use CUPS for printing on the Linux machine?

Yes I know / suppose so, but you still need a printing system for the
printing.

Sorry as I am new to Linux all i did is configure it to look for a printer
on a Windows SMB network and then load the correct drivers for the printer
(HP 1000 Laserjet). What other printing system is there?

That is correct... CUPS already installed (checked through add remove apps)
and printing system=cups in the SMB.conf file....still no joy
though...Thanks for your help though.

Go to: http://www.cups.org/faq.php there you have all the docs about
printing with samba and cups...

ln -s /usr/bin/smbspool /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb

You can find discussion of this in the Samba HowTo
with a search using backend as a keyword. Maybe
it is in Chapter 19. I had to do this once. The link
does not seem to be made automatically.

Yes, this should be possible to do.

What kind of printer is it?
Also, exactly what procedure did you follow to set up Linux
to see the printer and use it?
