Printing on a network with 2 different operating systems

Ok, i give up.

I'm running Windows XP on my client (laptop) and Windows ME on the host
(desktop) computer and i can't print from my laptop to save my life. The
printer is shared, and it'll print, but what prints is nothing but
gibberish. For example, if i printed this message all i'd get would be
"ldkfasdufpeuhgrlbnvosuyroweyrauehlkjahdfoaiuyserw elvrdf" or some such
nonsense.

I assume it's a driver issue but i'm not adept enough to fix it on my own,
in spite of my 3 weeks of effort in attempting to do so.

For what it's worth, the printer is an HP 1600 series.

I attempted the fix talked about here
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm and it got me to where
the printer was actually printing coherent English - which was an
improvement - but it doesn't print what i'm attempting to print. For
example, now if i print this message i'd get something similar to "Title:
Printing on a network printer with 2 different operating systems: stststsss
((990 555 99 55 357 246 244 246 357" and it would just keep repeating that
sort of numbering for about 20 pages if i'd let it.

Help!

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. Yes, it is completely possible
to print to computers using different operating systems. I can print to
my old HP 720C which is attached to my Linux desktop from any of the
Windows machines (which are running XP Pro and XP Home). I have a
client who can print to an HP printer connected to a Windows ME box
from his XP Home laptop. You are correct in that this is a driver
issue.

I Googled for "HP 1600 on a network?" and got some links that may be
helpful. This one discusses a different problem and refers to Win2k,
but I think the method used is worth your trying:

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=245592

Since this isn't really a wireless issue, you may want to post your
question in this Microsoft newsgroup instead:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax

Thanks for the input Malke. Your suggestion that i try
microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax -- i actually tried there a couple
weeks ago and didn't get so much as a nibble, so i thought i'd try here.
And the link you provided pointed me to one of the potential fixes i had
already tried - about 4 times thinking "maybe if i just do it one more time
it'll work". You know how us neophytes are.

I guess i'll just keep tinkering. Thanks again.
