I have XP HOME edition on Desktop. XP PRO on laptop. trying to get print
capabilities from laptop to printer attached to desktop. Use linksys as
router. Can ping desktop computer from laptop and vice versa. Firewall not
an issue I don't think. Not sure about ports though on Desktop and laptop or
if that is even an issur. Tried adding a Local Port to laptop with desktop
\\computer name\printer name and got error message "System detected a
possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact
server that authenticated you." Should I be trying to add a TCP/IP port? Am
I heading in the wrong direction all together. Print sharing is enabled for
printer in question on both machines with identical names for said printer.
What am I doing wrong here folks???

I don't have answers for you, but you sure explained my problem for me almost
perfectly, so I'm hoping you get an answer that helps me, too. I can ping my
desktop (XP Home) from my laptop (XP Pro), but not the other way around. I
have a printer connected to desktop w/ USP cable. Also using linksys router.
Desktop is connected via ethernet cable, laptop with wifi. I can get onto
the Internet with either computer, but the laptop won't access the printer.
I also can't view shared files on desktop from laptop. Note: in my case the
laptop is normally used at work, where it is part of a domain. Is this part
of the problem?

I tried the steps in the annoyances article to no avail. Additionally, I
cannot view a shared folder on my desktop, that is designated as shared, from
the laptop. Does that mean I am not connecting to the network?
The LAN network on the laptop always shows disabled. The wireless network
is the enabled network from the laptop. My LAN on the desktop is enabled and
there is no icon for any wireless networks on the desktop.
This stuff is thoroughly confussing!!!!
arghhhhh...
