Printer sharing between XP and 98SE

I've had a home network (combined ADSL modem and 4-port
router)of a 98SE desktop (known as "Nuthatch") and a 98SE
laptop ("Lark"), with a Lexmark Z55 connected to the
desktop, for some time.

I've now added an XP Home edition desktop ("Jackdaw") to
the network.

I installed Netbeui on Jackdaw as that's the LAN protocol
I've been using to date. All three machines networked fine
(file sharing, within XP's constraints) and all can access
the Web no problem.

Initially, I left the printer on Nuthatch and was able to
see it and print to it from the new XP machine, Jackdaw.
In the final config, however, I want the Z55 on Jackdaw.

So I moved it, downloaded the latest drivers and installed
it OK. Now, however, although I can SEE the printer from
the two 98 machines in Network Neighbourhood, can I use
it? Can I h*ll.

Whatever I try, including connecting the printer to each
of them and installing the drivers etc, whenever I try and
open the \\Jackdaw\LexmarkZ device in Network
Neighbourhood, 98 asks me if I want to set the printer up
on my computer. At the end of the process, the printer
appears briefly in "Printers" then disappears, and I get a
dialog box saying that the "printer represented by the
shortcut does not exist on this computer".

I've tried capturing printer ports, and it does appear in
the print dialog boxes in Windows apps, as:
"Where: \\Jackdaw\LexMarkZ"
but whenever I try to use it I get the (Lexmark)
message "problem communicating with the printer".

Can anyone help?!

Thx...Neil

Right-click the printer on the XP box, select Properties. On the Sharing
tab, check out the button that allows you to load drivers for other
operating systems. You will surely need to use this button to load Windows
98 drivers for your printer so Windows 98 clients can print to it.

Is there an Add/Remove entry in the Control Panel, or an uninstall command
in the Start menu for the existing Lexmark drivers? I wonder if the old
drivers are getting in the way. If you still have the first Lexmark printer
in the Printers control panel you may want to delete it from there first,
then see if you can uninstall the existing drivers.

Richard, been there, done that already, I'm afraid.

Since I can install the printer successfuuly as a local device if I actully
plug it into the USB port while I run the install process, I'm wondering if
this is to do with my use of Netbuei? I've also disabled TCP/IP over
NetBIOS. The way I've had my local network set up so far is to use Netbuei
for file and printer sharing etc, and have unbound all the local services
from TCP/IP.

NetBEUI for network connections on the LAN should work fine, but you could
always try putting TCP/IP into the mix and see if the printer works then.
Maybe the drivers will only work with TCP/IP? I don't know, not owning any
Lexmark printers. Sorry.

Well, I am late to the discussion, but, I have a similar network. One XP
desktop with a printer attached and two 98se laptops networked with a
router. I don't remember the details well enough to give you a
step-by-step. IIRC I first installed the printer on the XP, loaded
drivers, etc. and made sure that everything worked on the XP.

Here is the part where I am fuzzy on the details. I think I completely
removed all references to the printer from the 98se computers. Then go
through the add printer process on the 98se computers. And here it gets
even more fuzzy, but I think you don't add drivers to the 98se
computers, just a reference to the printer on the XP computer. And IIRC
the process is not intuitive. At one point in the add printer process, I
seem to remember that there is a choice of a "network printer" or a
"local printer". And I think the right choice is "local printer". I
think that leads you to a screen where you can choose the printer from a
list and that is where you pick the printer attached to the XP. Sorry,
for the vague reply, that is all I can remember.

Regards, Hawkeye

Well I called Lexmark tech support this morning, and the
guy I spoke with told me "it won't work between different
OS's". When I probed a little, he tried to tell me it
wouldn't work with any printer. I said I had had it
working when the printer was on a 98SE machine and being
addressed from the XP machine, but he was adamant. In the
end he admitted it was a Lexmark driver constraint, but
I'm not convinced (although the symptoms do support the
proposition).

So, I think I'll give up for now.

Hawkeye, thanks for the "vague recollections"! I think
I've been through everything you suggest. And Richard,
thanks for all your advice as well.

A learning experience.....Neil

Mike, that's a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Also, the direction is XP, and mvoing backwards won't make life easier
long-term. It's a new PC that came with XP, so I'd have to buy a 98 license.

So it's an option, but not a practical one.

Activation hassle? What activation hassle? I install it, when it restarts
it goes out over the broadband connection and activates itself. What
hassle?
