Hello All,

I have a small home network. A d-link router with a XP
pro box and a 98SE on hardwires, and a W2K machine via
wireless.
I am able to see, share, and change files between all
3 machines and all 3 can access the internet.
I have a Lexmark 6150 shared from the XP box. (It is
connected via USB if it matters) I can access the printer
from the W2K box.
Everything is working great except for 1 final task. I
am unable to install the shared 6150 printer to my 98SE
box.
I can see the shared printer in my workgroup and can
start the "add printer" using that share. But when it
comes time to actually find the printer from inside the
wizard, it fails to find it. I have tried adding it from
the add hardware wizard too with no luck.

ADDITIONAL INFO: When I try to add the 9x print
drivers thru the "additional printer drivers" wizard on
the XP box, I get errors. "there are no drivers for the
environment you are requesting located here" or "unable
to install Lexmark 6100 series, intel, windows 95, 98,
and ME driver. Operation could not be completed"
I know these are the correct 9x drivers for the
printer and that they downloaded correctly. If I try to
download them to the XP box from "setup", they are trying
to overwrite the XP peint drivers in my C:\Lxk6100
folder. I think that will only result in the wrong
drivers for the printer being installed on the XP
box ............ won't it?

Any and all suggestions or info pages are welcome. If
possible please write me directly at "(E-Mail Removed)"

Thanks in advance !!

Jeff

Copy the win 98 driver to a disk or directory on the hard drive on the W98
PC where you can find it.

Go to start>>printers and faxes. Double click on the add printer icon and
select network printer. click on next then click on browse. Browse to the
network printer you want to install. Click next and it will bring up a list
of printers and an option "have disk" . Click on have disk and then browse
to where you have put the driver. Click okay and it should install it.
(sumthink like that anyway - working from memory here and its not working to
well this time of morning!! :-) )

Thanks Tony,

But I tried it that way too. When the "setup' gets
towards the end, where it wants to actually connect to
the printer, it can't find it.
Strange how it will find it in a network browse, but
won't find it during installation.

I appreciate your time,

is the "share name" off the printer longer than 8 characters ? if so shorten
it and try again

The limit is actually 12 characters. Also, only use letters and
numbers in the share name -- no spaces or special characters.

First,

Thank you for the continued replies.

The current share name on the printer is "LexmarkX", 8
characters, no dashes or spaces.

Let's ReCap: Small home network. A d-link router with a
XP pro box and a 98SE box on hardwires, and a W2K machine
via wireless. A Lexmark 6150 shared from the XP box. An
HP 550c shared from the 98SE box [just realized I left
that out of my original post oooops ......... is that the
problem? Can I not share a printer from 98SE and receive
a share from XP at the same time on the 98SE box?]

1) I can connect to the internet from all 3 boxes.

2) I can see and share files between all three boxes.

3) I can share the HP from the 98SE box to the XP and W2K
boxes.

4) I can share the Lexmark from the XP box to the W2K box
[but NOT the 98SE box]

5) I can see the Lexmark share in the workgroup and the
network windows on the 98SE box.

6) I can run the add printer wizard from the share. I
have the correct drivers for the 9x environment from
Lexmark. When it comes time to search and locate the
printer from inside the Lexmark 9x setup utility, it just
find it no matter how many ways I try to install the darn
thing .............. AAAARRRRGGGG!!!.

I am still baffled. Could it be protocal or service
bindings? I "think" I have those issues configured
correctly, but not 100% sure.

Again, thanks for the replies. As long as you'll keep
making suggestions, I'll keep trying and replying.

Shouldn't be a problem. I've just dusted of an old W98 box and plugged it
into the hub to be networked with an XP box. connected an old LC200 printer
to the W98 box. Enabled sharing. Added both as network printers no
problem. XP can print to W98 printer and vice versa.

Must confess I'm perplexed!! Only thing I can think of is does your XP box
have a firewall? The W98 box may be trying to connect through a port that a
firewall may be blocking on the XP.

Under network components do you have both Client for Microsoft Networks AND
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks installed?

Hey Tony,

Yes, I am currently firewalled on the network side. [i
know that's not necessary] However when the firewall is
enabled, it states that it is configured for file and
frint sharing on the network side. But, just to be sure,
I tried dropping the firewall before my first post. It
didn't work that way either.

I am just about to give up. I just don't get it. and
now it's becoming an issue of "man vs. machine"

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the
lexmark being connected thru the usb port and not LPT1?
or if it's a protocal thing?

Oh well, thanks for trying and I appreciate your
suggestions. I'll keep pecking away at it.

Thanks,

j.

I had a similar problem and finally in desperation I tried printing from my
98SE and although it appeared not to be installed I found that I could
print!
Worth trying
