If you connect the computers directly to each other, without a
hub/switch/router, use a crossover Ethernet cable. A regular Ethernet
cable won't work.
If the XP laptop is the Internet sharing host, the whole setup is
easy. Running XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers will
automatically make all the right settings. Use it to configure XP as
the host and 98se as the client:

If the 98se desktop is the Internet sharing host, it's a bit harder:
1. Configure 98se as an Internet sharing host as shown here:
ICS Installation [Win98SE]
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...icsinstall.htm
2. Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on the laptop and tell it that the
computer connects to the Internet through another computer on your
network.
3. On 98se, go to Control Panel | Network and enable File and Printer
Sharing.
4. On 98se, go to Control Panel | Printers, right click the printer,
and share it.
If those tips don't get everything to work, please reply to this
message in the news group (not by E-mail) with more information.
Describe what doesn't work, which computer is to be the Internet
sharing host, which computer is connected to the printer that you want
to share, etc.
