Hi,

I have just set-up a home network with your (Steve's) help.

See, network set-up wizard, on this newsgroup.

I have a win 98 pc downstairs with an Ethernet cable to the wireless router,
upstairs we have an winXP PC which is wireless, into which is connected a HP
laser printer 2600n. The printer is connected to the upstairs PC with a usb
cable, but it does have an ethernet socket and I am told the it is "network
ready".

We can share files and that ok. But, we cannot use the computer downstairs
and print to the printer upstairs.

Just for information, the drivers are installed on the win98 PC downstairs
as we sometimes lug the printer downstairs to plug into the PC.

Can you help.

Steve

You have two choices:

1. Put the printer downstairs near the router (assuming it has an available
ethernet port) and make it a true network printer.

2. Share the printer on the XP machine upstairs. Is the printer shared on
that machine now? Look in the Printers folder on the XP machine. Does the
icon for the printer have a picture of a hand holding it? Right-click the
printer icon. Is "Share this printer" chosen? Does it have a share name?

I thought of a third possible solution, one that I can only guess exists but
I really have no idea where to go with it. There is probably some hardware
gadget that you can plug into either the ethernet or the USB port on the
printer to make it wireless (most likely a USB solution), allowing you to
connect the printer to the network via wireless. This would allow you to
make it a true network printer without having to move it downstairs to be
next to or near the router. But again, I don't know where to start looking
for such hardware. The advantage to having teh printer connected directly to
the network instead of connecting to the XP machine is that your 98 machine
doesn't have to depend on the XP machine in order to use the printer.

Thankyou, thankyou.

I will get back to you as soon as I have checked this out, and your previous
message.

I would prefer not to move the printer down stairs, so will check out you
sharing thingy.

In the mean time could I ask if you could have a look at my other message on
this forum "network set-up wizard" and give me your thought's

Many,many thanks, Steve.

Sure, but it will have to wait until tomorrow (or late, late, late tonight.)
Got plans for the evening. Regardless, Steve is the guy *I* would go to for
problems in this area, so.....

Thanks Gary

I will wait for Steve to get back, he has been a goldmine in the past, and
is still a gem.

The printer, if I was to plug the printer into the router via Ethernet, I
would need to move the router upstairs then run the phoneline upstairs, I
would like to avoid this if I can.I could possibly run an Ethernet cable
upstairs, from the router to the printer. but that somehow undermines the
"wireless" concept.

I looked on the Xp machine upstairs and I had already set it for sharing.

>>>>Does the icon for the printer have a picture of a hand holding it?<<<<<<

, Yes it does!!.

>>>>Right-click the printer icon. Is "Share this printer" chosen?<<<<<<<<<<

Yes it is!!

>>>>Does it have a share name?<<<<<<<<< Well, the 'puter "XP" is suggesting

"printer 5", When I tried to name it different, I was told the other DOS
based programs may not like it so I am sticking with printer 5.

Goodness, why Oh why, does it have to happen to me, all I want to do is use
the Printer!!!!!!!

When I log on down stairs it says there is a problem connecting to printer 5
upstairs.

Would the usb connection be a problem, would I be better connecting the
printer to the XP machine with an Ethernet cable.

Is there a scientific way of deducing where the fault is, Like "pinging" the
Printer to find the fault.

And last, Yes I guess there is a gadget to make the printer wireless, I
shall Google.

Let me have your wisdom, Steve.

yippee!!! yippee!!!! doggies what's-its,

Printer now working upstairs from downstairs, without a cable running across
the floor and up the staircase.

After trying a million times (at least), it seemed to me that although the
print info window listed the HP printer, and said upstairs, it seemed like
it was sending it to somewhere else (but there is no somewhere else).

Then I sat looking at the printers "window" on the downstairs win98 PC, I
was looking at an icon for the HP printer with a check by it to set it as
the default printer.

Then it occurred to me that I was looking at a default printer installed on
win 98 PC and not at the same printer installed on the winXP PC upstairs.

SO!!, taking the bull by the whatit's, as I do not what a printer connected
to the printer downstairs I deleted all the printers from the win98 PC and
was warned that there was no printer installed on the computer, so I clicked
add printer and with the wizard found the HP printer upstairs, clicking on
the button that finds the port, and hey presto!! it offered to print a test
page, Yer!! I've heard that before.

But!! as I went upstairs - guess what - Oh happy days!!!!

IT READS - If you can read this you are no longer a
Muppet.....................etc,etc

Thankyou again for your help, it is great to know one is not on ones own.

You are all wonderful

You have helped me connect the network,

Helped me get the printer working,

Just the internet to go.

Many thanks Steve.

And I was just going to suggest that you remove ALL of the printers (both
from Win98 and from XP machines), and maybe even all of the networking
stuff, and start all over, <s>. Both with Printers and with Network stuff,
wiping them out, restarting the machine and starting over is often *the*
best idea. By the time you get to that point, all of the drivers are in
place and easy for Windows to find, and it often takes removing *everything*
for Windows to be able to get it right. If anything remains, it seems to try
to second-guess your intentions, automatically inserting "remembered"
configurations that already aren't working.

Nice going, Steve. :-)

I have a LaserJet 2600n, and I love it. You can connect it directly
to a home network via Ethernet and print to it from Windows 2000, XP,
and Vista. Unfortunately, a direct network connection doesn't allow
printing from Windows 95, 98, or Me.

Thanks for looking in Steve,

Can I ask if you have had time to look at my reply to your reply on my other
thread entitled "network set-up wizard".
I will post again to your reply saying "this one" so you know which one.

Cheers Steve
