Hi I have 3 computers on my home network, a laptop, an old computer and a
new computer. The new computer has Windows XP, the old computer has Windows
98SE, as does the laptop. The laptop is ancient and serves no purpose on my
network other than I have it, I have a network card, a cable and a four port
hub. I also have a Canon LBP 460 printer that under no circumstances will
work with XP. Therefore to print from XP I save the file and then use the
old computer to print it.
If I was to convert my old redundant laptop to become a print server and
connect my printer to it, would the operating system of the computers
connected to it, i.e. Windows XP, then become irreverent? If so, how do I
turn my laptop into a print server, preferably without purchasing any
additional sofyware?

Thanks Sophie

Networking how-to's can be found at these sites.

Yes they can, but none explain how to turn an old laptop into a print
server, or if I willl be able to do what I want.
The problem I have is that a Canon lbp 460 printer does not have any drivers
for Windows XP so that there is no way to print from Win XP. I have tried to
print from XP with the printer connected to the Win 98 machines but of
course when Win XP wants the drivers for the printer it throws a wobbly as
there are none for it. Canon have no intention of writing drivers for XP so
whenever I want to print anything I have to save the file then go to the Win
98 machine and print it.

Yes. Printing to a networked printer does require the correct driver to be
installed on the pc which is initiating the printing. The pc where the
printer attached is essentiall the end of a spooling chain. Unless you con
find a driver that will work ok under XP then you are up that proverbial
creek!

Yes, I think you need drivers on the computer that initiates the printing.
One way you could print from any computer (I think) is to connect the
printer to a router that has a print server built in.

That was my original post.

Was there any way to make an old laptop become a print server, or now a
router?

Don't think so - you still need an appropriate driver on the computer that
initiates the printing. Everything outside that computer, whatever you
dress it up as, is just performing spooling.

Try looking for a driver for a newer model of the printer from the same
manufacturer's
range - you often find they work. Or a generic PCL or EscS one - many
manufacturers use something "semi-standard".

There is no Win XP Driver for a Canon LBP 460. NOR will any other driver
from any other manufacturer work. . Try searching for a Win XP driver for a
Canon LBP 460 printer, you will soon find that out.

If you find one that works you will make a fortune. And just because a toner
cartridge from another make of printer fits does not mean that the drivers
for that printer will work, as someone has already suggested.

Another idea to save me from buying a new printer bites the dust.

But you CAN try to use Win2000 drivers, if they are available.

Just a thought...

Perhaps you should read my post properly, before firing off, I said "Try
looking for a driver for a newer model of the printer from the same
manufacturer's range" NOT trying looking for one for the same model.

The tone of you posting suggests that you do not appreciate ideas from those
trying to be helpful - so, I for one, won't bother any more.
