print server error

We have a Win2k3 server running as a print server. Users connect to the
server to attach to printers using \\server IP address and some use \\server
name. Since last week anyone that originally attached to a hosted printer
that mapped using the IP address can no longer print or attach to any new
printers on the server. Strange thing is that they CAN open the server by
\\server IP , it just fails when they try to attach to printers. It says
something about the printer name may be typed incorrectly or something, but
that cant be the case because users can still attach to network printers
when they map to \\server hostname. Any thoughts?

use net view \\servername and net view \\serveripaddress to compare what's
different or post them here.

Thanks, I was hoping that would uncover some clues as to what my be
happining here. Unfortunately, the output was identical on both commands.
Being that this is a govt facilty, posting the info would be deemed a breech
in security.

Update:

I noticed that when using \\IP it brings up the list of printers with names
in lowercase. The actual printer names themselves(incl sharename) are all
uppercase.

Using \\servername the list of printers are all in uppercase. As a test, I
tried to map to \\IP\printername from the run line using all caps. But that
did not work. Secondly, I tried to map to \\servername\printername in
lowercase to rule out a case sensitive issue. That worked.

I am desparate at this point. Dont know what else to do.

I don't think case is the issue here, rather authentication. When browsing
with the computername, WINS (assuming using WINS), will resolve the name,
and will authenticate you based on the currently logged on name, however
when connecting by IP, it will not.
