print problem

Recently networked two 98se and 1 XP system.
Here's the problem and not sure if networking is problem or not but no one
else, in other newsgroups(office, word.newusers), seems to know.
I have two HP722c printers. One connected to the XP and one to a 98se
system. The other 98se does not have a printer.
Since networking the 98se printed keeps locking up Word when I try to print
an already created Word .doc.
If I create a "new" .doc everything works fine.
The only thing I can come up with is the print driver(cd) that originally
came with the printer is for a 720c which loads fine on the 98se system. The
XP system loads it own 722c driver and I'm wondering if this is causing the
conflict? I have "un-shared" the printers but still have problem.
This may just be a coincidence but wondering if this may be the REAL
problem.

thanks,
L.

Can the .doc be printed on the machine the printer is connected to without
locking Word? If not:
When executing a print over the LAN, does Word lock when attempted from all
machines? If not:
Which machine is the .doc on?
Which machine/s are you executing print jobs from/to?

> If I create a "new" .doc everything works fine.

Does it work only once or will it continue to work on subsequent prints?

Shouldn't be, XP and 98 will use different drivers. Many, not all, printer
drivers are compatable between models. I have a HP DJ882c connected to a 98SE
machine which uses the drivers for the 880c and XP uses the 882c drivers.

To rule out the possibility of incompatable drivers, uninstall the printer on
the XP and reboot.
When Windows detects the printer, do not let it install the drivers. Select to
"choose from a list" or "choose from a location".
If you choose list, follow the steps and select the HP 720c and install either
from the disk or use the drivers included with XP.
If you choose location, place the HP CD in the tray and use the browse button to
point to the location where the driver files are on the disk.

a. Yes. The only printer that's giving me problems is the one attached to
the 98se system.
b. No idea. haven't tried to print over the lan. I can print from the 98se
that does not have a printer to the 98se that does with no problems. Haven't
tried to print to the xp from either 98's.
c. The 98se that has printer attached.
d. The 98se's.

Good question. Haven't tried "saving" a new doc and then opening and
printing.
Will give that a shot and get back to you.

So you're saying to load the 720x driver on the XP machine?

Tried it once and XP didn't like it. Something about compatability.
Should I just go ahead and force it to load?

Will try all this when I get back to office either tomorrow or Monday.

Thanks,,,

Ok, a bit confusing.
I asked:
<quote>
Can the .doc be printed on the machine the printer is connected to without
locking Word?
</quote>

You stated:
<quote>
Yes. The only printer that's giving me problems is the one attached to
the 98se system.
</quote>

Let's clarify:
On the 98SE with the connected printer, you open Word and the .doc.
When you try to print the .doc, Word locks, correct?
If no, Word doesn't lock, then the .doc can be printed on the machine that the
printer is connected to.
If yes, Word locks, then it doesn't print on the machine that the printer is
connected to.

I also asked:
<quote>
When executing a print over the LAN, does Word lock when attempted from all
machines?
</quote>

You stated:
<quote>
No idea. haven't tried to print over the lan. I can print from the 98se
that does not have a printer to the 98se that does with no problems. Haven't
tried to print to the xp from either 98's.
</quote>

You have printed over the LAN (Local Area Network) from one 98SE to another,
and as you state <quote>with no problems</quote>.
Was the print job done from Word?
If no, then it's in most likelyhood a problem with Word.
If yes, was it the same .doc? If no, it may be a problem with the .doc. If yes,
it was the same .doc, can you print other .docs without locking Word?

I await the results on subsequent prints.

Leave the printer as is on the XP. From all you stated, it's not the problem.

Sorry for the confusion. I find myself getting confussed trying to explain,
;-)
The printer that is attached to the 98se is the problem.
You are correct, I can print, from Word, from the 98se w/o printer to 98se
with printer attached over LAN. (Actually I created a test doc to see if it
would print. I guess I should copy one of the already created docs on the
problemed system, load it to the other 98se(no printer) and see if it will
print the doc back to the printer over LAN.) If so, then Word must be the
problem.
So far, the only lockup occurs is when I try to print and/or I clcik
File/Page Setup on an already created Word doc on the 98se system with the
printer attached.

Again, this may only be a coincidence that started when I networked the
systems.

HOPE this explains w/o further confussion.

Thanks,
L.

Thankyou for clarifying.

I don't know what has been suggested in other ng's and if anything I mention
is a repeat, please dismiss it and state the suggestion was already attempted.
If I feel it may be pertinent and needs to be attempted again, I'll let you
know. For now, all queries will be focused on the 98SE machine with the printer
attached.

What version of Office/Word is installed?

Can any other .docs successfully print?

When Word locks, does the title bar flash and/or are there any error messages,
possibly even hidden behind the open window?
To check, minimize the open window. If it won't minimize, try either clicking
the Show Desktop icon in the taskbar quicklaunch or press ALT+TAB to toggle
between windows.

Is Norton Antivirus installed? If yes, this only applies if you have Office
2000 or later installed.
Check the options to see if the Office Plug-in is Enabled, if it is disable it
and try to print. May require closing Word and/or rebooting.

In Word > Tools > Options > Print tab, uncheck Background Printing if it is
checked. Background printing uses more memory.

(The program completely locks up. Will try this Monday.)

(Will check Monday but I'm pretty sure I disabled this feature after
installing NAV.)

(Again, will check Monday.)

(Thanks for all suggestions.)

update:
When Word lock-up, I click on minimize twice and the flashing stops, the
print screen pops up and works fine.
