Hi - I've got a Netgear wireless network that's currently working fine.
Unfortunately, for unrelated reasons, I'm preparing for a reinstall of WXP
on my primary computer that is hardwired to the router. When my network was
originally set-up, I had assistance from an experienced friend who is no
longer available. Is there anything I can do prior to the reinstall -
backup of related files or data, etc - that will help me get the network
back up and running after the reinstall? Thanks much from a serious newbie.
~OC~

The router configuration will most likely reside only in the router.
What ever was installed on the PC would be some setting up software.
What you ought to do is backup the router configuration - the process
may vary by model. Typically to backup a router a copy of its
configuration file will be transferred to your PC.

Reply back with details of the model# and what software you have on
the PC related to the router for further help.

Hi OC, go through the networking icons on your desktop and/or right click on
them to get the current configuration of your setup. Right click on My
Network Places, choose Properties then right click on your Local Area
Connection and make notes of of everything including the Properties of
everything that is in your >This connection uses the following items:< Then
things like mapped drives(double click My Network Places), shared
resources(Double click My Computer). Write it all down so you remember how
you did it. Then look at all your drives in My Computer and find the ones
with hands on them(indicates a shared resource). Make lots of notes and
write down as much as you can. Also Find the printers tab in Start Settings
Control panel, double click that then write everything down and make notes
of your configuration options. XP will try to do most of this for you but
you will have to tell XP what to Share, When to do it and how to do it. Then
go to Start Settings Control panel Administrative tools, then double click
on Services. Write or print it all out for refference because it WILL help
you down the road if you have problems. Some things may be disabled, set to
manual or set to automatic by neccesity. This will get you started, then
once you realize whats going on and why your doing it you will be able to
figure it out, contrary to popular belief it is easy.

Good luck and I'm sure I left some out that others will be happy inject or
correct(clarify),

If you mess up this site explains what you need to do to set up WXP....

http://www.netgear.com/education/mentor/0container.htm

Also remember that sometimes you need to reset the cable modem before you
can access the router. I wasted a lot of time trying to access my RP114
before remembering to read the manual oops.

What about the files and settings transfer wizard located in system tools?
