PPTP passthrough and Panther vs Linksys

I cannot get my PowerBook running 10.3.1 to use my Linksys BEFW11S4v4
router's PPTP passthrough feature.

Does that ring a bell for anyone?

Here is the situation:
- I have this PowerBook as well as a PC on the same home network
using the above mentioned wireless router.
- The router's PPTP passthrough is enabled.
- I try to use VPN on the PC: it works fine (and it correspondingly fails
if I disable the router's PPTP passthrough).
- I try to use VPN on the Mac: it hangs while "negociating".
- If I connect the Mac directly to the outside world rather than through
the router, the VPN connection goes through just fine (so it's not like
my VPN config is screwed up).

Any help?

Stefan

Some years back, I had such a problem. It turns out that the older
linksys router I was using could only route one PPTP connection at a
time. Unfortunately, it did not forget which computer had an open
connection just because the connection closed. Instead, I had to power
cycle the Linksys box when I wanted a different computer to get out.

With my newer SMC wireless box 7004AWBR, I did not have this problem.

I would have thought that Linksys would have fixed this, though, so it
might be a red herring.

I think my BEFW11S4v4 has the same limitation (is it even possible
to do PPTP passthrough for several machines at the same time ?) although
I don't know if it can switch the VPN passthrough to another computer
without powercycling, so I tried powercycling: no luck (I get the exact
same result: the OSX machine stays stuck in `negociating' until it
times out).

I have a similar problem usinga TiBook 1Ghz under 10.3.2 with a LinkSys
BEFSR41 router. If I connect directly to the cable modem, everything
works well. With the router in place, I also hang at the Negotiating
stage. I have no other devices that are turned on connected to the
router and have never tried using my PC for PPtP. Power-cycling the
router has no effect.

Contacting LinkSys simply ends up with them scratching their head.
Their support folks don't seem to know a tremendous amount about PPtP
(as in nothing other than the fact that there is an option for it on
the router configuration)

It doesn't even seem to matter if I put the computer into the router's
DMZ and use a static IP address for the computer. This should
effectively put the computer outside of the router's "firewall" and
allow everything to pass through with no protection.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I am beginning to think that
this LinkSys router doesn't actually support PPtP pass through, even
though it has a configuration option for it.

Thanks,

-Rodney

Curious, has anyone found a solution to this problem? I hate to have
to RDP to my XP box just to connect to my office VPN then RDP to my
workstation. There's a lot of lag when I do it. I'm inclined just to
set up my cheap LinkSys USB 1.1 and make my XP box route traffic via
shared internet connection until the next worm attack.
