PPTP -client- "use default gateway" slows client to remote upload

We have a windows 2003 box with RRAS enabled for PPTP...

On the client, if they do the defaults, use default gateway is checked...

When the client does this, they then get locked in at the remote PPTP
server's max upload internet speed/pipe..

So doing a speed test on the machine(client) reveals that they have say
2.9MB download and 2.9MB upload (both values are equal to the host servers
max capability.

The way around this, was by unchecking the use default gateway.. otherwise
they also could not access their local machines on their LAN...

So two questions..

1. Is there a way around this, short of adding routes, which probably wont
even work..

2. Is clearing the "use default gateway" considered secure? IE: General
tips say, if you have VPN on a laptop and you are at a public WIFI location,
you should connect to your VPN to make web pages secure etc.. but i would
think that clearing that checkbox for the default gateway would invalidate
this idea?

Thanks

Depends on who's prepective...

From the perspective of the LAN you re remoting into it is not secure
because they loose control of your Internet Access,...and hence the ability
to filter/control it, because the control of it is taken over by you and
your own separate internet connection.

From your local perspective it is basically irrelevant in terms of security.

Remember, Remote Access VPN is not a risk to the user initiating it (for the
most part),...it is a risk to the LAN they are remoting into.
