Greetings wireless enthusiasts:

I'm currently experiencing an issue with a Netgear MR814 (NG-MR814) router
(NOT the v2 version), and maybe someone out there has run into this issue
and possibly resolved it. If so, I'd appreciate your input.

I have a Linux 9.0 server on my home LAN that's running the Apache webserver
with MS Frontpage Extensions, and I'm trying to make this server accessable
on the internet. I'm using a DSL (Bellsouth.net) link and the NG-MR814
connects to a Westell A90 DSL modem that was supplied by Bellsouth.net.
Three of my systems, including the webserver, connect directly into the
NG-MR814 and I have two wireless systems.

To accomplish what I'm attempting to do (allow inbound access to my
webserver), the following needs to occur:

1. The Westell A90 modem's connection type has to configured as "Bridged
Ethernet".
2. The NG-MR814 has to be configured for PPPoE.
3. Port forwarding has to be enabled on the NG-MR814 (httpd: port 80)to my
webserver.
4. Dynamic DNS has to be configured to deal with my dynamically assigned IP
address.
(see http://www.dslwebserver.com/ for info on how to setup a DSL connected
webserver)

The Westell A90 and NG-MR814 configuration that I'm attempting can be
reviewed in the following web document:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/7815

Here's my problem. When I put the Westell A90 into bridged ethernet mode,
the NG-MR814 fails to initiate a PPPoE connection the majority of the time.
I have successfully established a PPPoE connection via the NG-MR814 twice
while attempting this, but most of the time the PPPoE connection is not
established. The two times that I did successfully establish the
connections, the NG-MR814 disconnected the PPPoE connection overnight due to
its idle timeout setting (default is 5 minutes).

If I look at the router status from the NG-MR814's menu options during a
failed PPPoE session attempt, it appears to show that authentication is not
successful. I know that the username and password that I have entered into
the NG-MR814's PPPoE configuration menu is correct because I've confirmed it
with Bellsouth.net. Also if I enter the same username and password into the
Westell A90 in PPPoE connect mode, it successfully establishes a PPPoE
connection.

I am running the latest router firmware on both the NG-MR814 and the Westell
A-90. Anyone have success with this type configuration or have experienced
similar problems with the Netgear MR814 establishing a PPPoE connection?

I've had no real complaints to this point with the NG-MR814, so this is the
first real issue I've experienced with it. Also, does anyone know if setting
the Netgear's idle timeout setting to 0, prevents it from disconnecting the
PPPoE connection during the rare times that I've gotten this link
established?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Cheers

I haven't had any problems with PPPoE on my MR814. It may be your DSL
modem. To keep the connection alive just have one of your computers
always check you email every few minutes and make the timeout time longer.
I have kept my connections up for over week by doing this.

I'm not familiar with the Westell modem. My speedstream modem does not
initiate PPOE - if I am not running a wifi router, SBC-supplied connection
software on my host does that, so no reconfiguration of my modem is required
to insert a wifi router.

One way to try to see what's going on:

1. Buy a cheap 4- or 8-port Ethernet hub (not a switch). This should cost
less than $25.
2. Configure the Westell for bridging, plug the Netgear into the hub, plug
the Westell into the hub.
3. Download Ethereal to a PC or laptop (it's a free network analyzer).
4. Plug the Ethereal host into the hub.
5. Power down the Netgear.
6. Start Ethereal capture on the Ethernet adapter, in promiscuous mode.
7. Power up the Netgear and capture an entire connection sequence.

When you stop capture, Ethereal will display its capture buffer. If
connection was successful, you should see a sequence like this:

PADI PADO PADR PADS "LCP Config Request" "LCP Config Ack" "PAP Authenticate
Request" "PAP Authenticate Ack" "IPCP Config Request" "IPCP Config Ack"

You may also see "LCP Echo Request"/"LCP Echo Reply" at the end. There may
be a NAK or two in the log, but they should be followed by successful
retries. Your authentication may not be PAP, but if it's a simple
loginid/password it probably is. If your connection fails, look for major
departures from the above pattern. That should suggest where the problem
lies. If you see PADT (Active Discovery Terminate), then the Netgear is
dropping the connection. One thing I've noticed on my D-Link is that, if it
is set to auto-reconnect, it can thrash with the PPOE server. I think its
response timeouts are set too low, and there's no way to reconfigure. My
"fix" is to reconnect manually, via the config screen. It still autoconnects
when powered up.
