PPPoE- freezes computer after connection

After I installed a Bewan ST Ethernet modem, and used win XP Pro natif PPPoE
connection (the CD provided with the PPPoE was a lousy driver so I removed
it and rebooted), the connection is made to my ISP. All leds are green
synchroniastion is on etc. So far so good.
BUT....
When I then click on OE or IE nothing happens: the arrow appears on the
screen but never gets to the hour glass, it simply disapperars. In fact,
every program Ii click on does the same, i.e. nothing loads. I click on the
PPPoE connection to select disconnect but nothing happens.
I click on Start, Turn of Computer, but nothing happens.
I hit Alt- Ctrl-Del and nothing happens. I disconnect the Bewan Ethernet
cable, and hit Alt-Ctrl-Del again and most of the time I manage to stop one
process or another, and quite often IE or OE remembers only then it was
called up before and loads.
Once OE reloaded I hit on the PPPoE connetion to connect to ISP, but then
it gets no connection (error 678) .
even though the line on the modem is synchronzied (all leds are green) .
Of course my ADSL USB modem on a diffrent computer when connected to the
same phone line works fine ( I do not run the USB and the Ethernet modems at
the same time of course)
What is happening and how to overcome this.

Are you in France, Pieter? If so, that could be the overall problem.
Microsoft's Broadband Networking hardware is authorized for sale and use
only in North America.

Yes Chris
I am in France, But we have broadband here too , it is called ADSL, ADSL
works fine on my other computer.
I do not use any HARDWARE from MS only software like XP
Today I logged in so PPPoE it works now fine for OE (I write you this
message via my PPPoE connection now) , but when I load IE it gets
stuck.Something to do with my firewall Outpost 1.0? Do I need to activate
soemething in there like UDP protocols or whatever (I already activated
Allow NETBIOS )
Any ideas ?

Okay, but this isn't a general networking support group, Pieter. We support
Microsoft's Broadband Networking hardware and software only. You might want
to post to the microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web or
microsoft.public.fr.windowsxp.connexion newsgroup.
