Hi,

Our office just moved and we switched from a cable company
to ADSL company for Internet.

configuration:

WAN -- modem -- server 2003(NAT & VPN) -- LAN

I want to share the connection on my LAN through RRAS but
cannot find the sufficient info to do it...

It was easier when I had cable since the NIC connected to
the Internet had the IP given by our ISP but not for a
PPPoE connection...

Need help plz!!!

Sincerely,

Pierre-Charles

I'd avoid ICS if at all possible. Get a hardware firewall/router
appliance - it can do NAT for you instead of having your server do it. It
will handle the PPPoE connection and let you share out the Internet
connection with your entire network. Disable DHCP on the router and keep
your Windows server doing DHCP.

There are many options for such appliances - you can pick up a NetGear
FR114P for about $80 USD or check out www.sonicwall.com for some more
full-featured devices. I personally use Sonicwalls everywhere and use their
proprietary IPSec VPN instead of native Windows VPN...it works really really
well.

Thank you for the advise.

The thing is that I'm using a router (NAT) as we speak in
replacement of the RRAS console and Server 2003 doing the
NAT. But I want to setup the NAT on my server so I can get
the MSN VPN to work. I know tha ICS is not good for
security that is why I'm trying to make the NAT/basic
firewall to work in the RRAS snap-in with my new ADSL
connection.

Thanks again for your time,

Pierre-Charles Mignault

If you have Server 2003, have you tried using the PPPoE interface in
RRAS?

That is exactly the thing I'm trying to do... Use RRAS to
get my PPPoE connection to work.

I need a HOW TO because I can't see the WAN Mini Port
(PPPoE) in the "port" section of the RRAS snap-in.

Thanks,

Pierre-Charles

That's odd. It shows up in mine, even though I don't have PPPoE router!

Never done it myself, as I don't have a PPPoE setup. What about KB 317496
"HOW TO: Create a PPPoE Connection in Windows Server 2003" ?

No this won't help because it is not using the RRAS so I
cannot install my VPN from there... But thanks anyway
I'll look around if I can find help.

Pierre-Charles
