I have a PC that has ethernet. it also uses PPP to dial to a remote PC.
The connection has been working until recently. Now the link comes
up, the route is set, but no traffic goes across the link. I can't
ping, telnet, or anything to the remote PC. The problem is totally
intermittant and works on some calls and not on others. I am at a
loss. My default route remains the ethernet connection, then I setup a
distinct route to the remote machine. it is on a different subnet so I
have even tried to setup a generic subnet route through ppp0 and that
still fails on occasion.

A PPP link provides a "distinct" route to the peer ("remote machine"),
no setup needed. That route alone should allow both an ping echo
request and a TCP SYN request to open a connection for telnet to be
sent to the peer.

I don't know what "generic subnet route" means.

We (or at least I) need a clearer description of the problem(s)
including, but not limited to, the outputs of route -n, ifconfig,
and tcpdump -vn -i ppp0, and what system changes, if any, were made
just prior to the beginning of the problems (and so might be related
to them). The appropriate log messages obtained by using the pppd
debug and chat -v options for a PPP connection that works and for
one that doesn't would also be nice.

If you think you are at a loss then consider the fact that we don't
have the hands-on access to the problem that you do.
