it seems that only ppp v.2.4.0b2 supports ppp over atm. The most recent ppp
(2.4.2) doen't have the file pppoatm.c, and do not (of course) generate the
library pppoatm.so

Is anyone aware of some trick in order to have pppoatm.so also in newer
versions?

Huh? There is a file pppoatm.c the kernel source and a configuration
option for it, but there is *none* in any _standard_ pppd source, not
even 2.4.0b2.

I've never seen any reference to a "pppoatm.so" library.

If there is actually a pppoatm.so then you probably need to ask Debian.
Or google for pppoatm.so. It sounds very much like a plugin for pppd.
