ppp connection crashes frequently

I am using a Linmodem with a Conexant chip and the appropriate driver. I
use Kppp for dialup. My ppp connection closes frequently with exit status
16 - the modem hung up. What can I do about it?

Simple: buy a real modem. Time is money in some sense at least: do you
have the time to do the troubleshooting?

If you do, ensure that your modem driver is logging everything, and that
pppd has the "debug" option. Then watch your logs, act according to what
you see, and post your results. Good luck.
