I am using a knoppix HD Debian installation, on which I have installed
kernel 2.4.24 with ppp over atm support configured. I have also a pppd
version 2.4.2b3 installed. After kernel compilation I can't load ppp_generic
o whatever else, beacuse I am getting a message that sounds like "I can't
get kernel version reference..." ????

I thought I need to recompile ppp, but I havo no source code on my PC and I
can't find ppp-2.4.2b3 sources online..

Any help, please?

Always post exact copies of messages; half-remembered hand-copies are
Bad Things.

One wild guess would be you need to put lines like

alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic

in /etc/modules.conf, or update modprobe.

Another would be that you may need (for whatever reason) to recompile
the kernel without the option that sets version information on all
module symbols.

The latest pppd version is 2.4.2 available at ftp.samba.org in /pub/ppp.

There is a simple patch for a small bug in 2.4.2 at the web site in my
signature. It might or might not be of use to you - you may never
encounter the bug - but it is _not_ related to the problem above.

Cliff,

sorry to not have copied the correct error message, but as I have this
problem with ppp, I can connect only booting on my Windows partition, and I
forgot to copy the message itself.

I think you are right on the "set version information" issue... I have set
it because it is aked to make pp over atm working... I will try switching it
off. What effect could this cause on other subjects?

I have downloaded the new ppp and I'll make it a try..

Fabio

Try to compile ppp_generic in the kernel, not as a module.

According to the help section for that option it shouldn't make any
difference for kernel modules that come with a standard kernel and
are recompiled after the kernel itself is compiled. I don't know why
it says you "would benefit" by answering Y when using modules from
non-kernel sources.

The fact that this is MPPE kernel code for PPP likely means that
someone had to patch the kernel since, at least up to and including
2.4.24, no MPPE code for PPP is in standard kernel sources. Which in
turn means that I haven't a clue as to how answering Y or N for that
option will affect things. (Well, I said it was a wild guess.)
