Is there such a thing as a combined 56K modem and ADSL modem?

I'm not aware of any such device.

I run a ST 530 router on Ethernet for my BB internet connection and have a
PCI 56k modem installed for the fax program on my PC. They both run down the
same dedicated PC phone line via the splitter.

With this set up I have an always on internet connection and also WinFax is
standing by 24/7 all down the same phone line.

Some of the Draytex products allow ISDN backup, not sure about 56k analogue
though

Why not just have the modem on one of the pc's

In my case, I was wondering about the ability to provide some sort of
backup if the ADSL connection fell over, for whatever reason.
Technical problems or moving house.

The number of times you're likely to have to change over between ADSL
and dial-up is so small that it wouldn't be worth the complication of an
automatic changeover, even if there is one. Just leave the modem
attached and keep your dial-up connection(s), but set the defaults in
your internet programs for ADSL. You'll probably never have to change
back.

Rod.
