Hello.. I'm running a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain (2
controllers, only one of which is Windows 2003).. After installing the Feb. 8
Security Updates, my Windows 98 clients can no longer resolve 2003 server. It
does not show up in server list from domain (all other network PCs show up,
including Windows 2000 domain controller.. The Windows 2003 DC does not show
up in list). All this is while viewing from a Win9x machine.

Also, on the 2003 Server, when I browse machines on the domain, I see
nothing. No clients, servers, nothing appears in the list.

Basically, the machines CAN log into the domain, but they cannot map drives
or resolve the DC name. Also, the DC cannot show me a listing of any machines
on the network. Any ideas?

Did NetBios over TCP/IP get disabled on the Windows 2003 server?

For a machine to "see" anything on the network, provided all name resolution
and network browsing mechanisms are in place and working properly, the
workstation service must be running.

Windows 98 clients use WINS to locate DCs. Check your WINS server.

Check your WINS server. Run browstat and check the functioning of you
subnet master browser and the domain master browser. Is the "Computer
Browser" service running on your DCs?

more info: From the Win98se Clients, I can ping the DC by name, so it appears
WINS and DNS is working. I'm logging into the domain ok, I just can't browse
this 2003 DC via exploring the domain. The crazy part is, as I mentioned
previously, on the 2003 DC I cannot see ANY other machines in the domain on
the Exploring tree. All XP Pro machines are connecting, browsing, and logging
in fine.

All this happened after doing the Feb. 8 security updates to the 2003 dc.

yes, it was disabled. I changed it to "default" setting, which gets NetBios
setting from dhcp server, or ultimately enables it. I also added the WINS
server to the TCP/IP properties on the DC. This has fixed my problem, on by
Win98 client end, as well as server end. Thank you!
