It is probably a really stupid question as I am sure the answer is no.

BT broadband was supposed to be installed yesterday and BT tell me
it's all connected and working yet our internet never went off and I
am still using the virgin broadband.

I am trying to explain to them that it isn't possible to be still
using virgin if we are now connected to BT. I am not making much
progress :-(

As BT and Virgin are different one being copper wires the other being a
cable network I'm not following.

This might be asking a really silly question, but is your virgin
broadband on a cable modem?

Again, this may be stating the bleeding obvious, but if you have virgin
cable broadband, and are transferring to ADSL, you need to disconnect
your local network from the cablemodem and connect it to the adsl modem.

If it's a virgin adsl -> bt adsl switch, it may be that (a) virgin have
not yet removed your access from their service, and (b) you have not yet
configured your modem to connect to the bt service instead.

Did you swap a virgin supplied adsl modem for a bt one? If not, what did
you do at your end as part of the change over process?

So is it possible to be still receiving the virgin broadband even
though BT have activated their broadband?

Nothing, I was expecting the virgin cionnection to go off yesterday
at which point I would have plugged in the BT router and set it up to
receive BT.

Can't you just drop the virgin modem and pop the BT one one?
or at least power down the current modem and leave it powered down for a
few hours. When powered back up you will soon find out if Virgin has
pulled the plug or not.

PC's and modems can be very "sticky" with regards to wanting to give up
existing info. (ip address etc) and refreshing details.

Yes - in some cases! As Virgin ADSL uses the BT DSLAM at the exchange the
phoneline broadband wiring will not, AFAIK, have changed (unlike a change
to or from a LLU ISP).

NORMALLY the DSLAM restricts (in its software settings) connections to only
the "current ISP" - that the one paying BT Wholesale for the service. In
case they have just relaxed the settings during the transition period it
would be worth trying the BT router to see if it will connect.

Well, that would depend on whether there was a physical connection
change at the exchange end or not.

If your adsl was being physically moved from virgin adsl provisioning
equipment to bt adsl provisioning equipment in the exchange, then it
should no longer work on the virgin login.

However, if the only change is that your bt username and password will
now enable you to log in to the bt authentication service, and virgin
have not yet disabled you from accessing their service, then as long as
you present a virgin login domain in your login requests, the non
provider specific adsl provisioning equipment will look at the login
domain that your adsl modem logs in with and route your authentication
and data according to that domain.

So, if you want to connect to your bt adsl service, you may need to use
your bt login, as it appears that thus far virgin may not have disabled
your no longer subscribed to login.

This would concern me somewhat me, as it might indicate that virgin had
also failed to cancel such things as direct debits!

It happens during a migration. To get to the new provider you'll
need to program in the new username and password and reboot the
router/modem device.

Also, I've had an incompetent transfer over to LLU in the past where the
tech left the old connection to the BT equipment as well as adding the
connection to the new provider's equipment, took ages to sort out. Try
explaining to support staff (including an openreach specialist broadband
tech) that an LLU line shouldn't be able to sync and connect to the
local speed test domain provided by BT exchange equipment.
