I am a linux user who was given an M$BN MN-500, it works ok
for most things but the port forwarding is busted (it wont
recognize that i added my webserver onto port 80) and its
really not very secure (my friend was able to gain access
to it very easily, luckily he was stopped by my encrypted
linux harddrive) and I have tried to secure it. Would it
be possible to install a stripped down version of BSD or
another form of *nix on it? (could i update its firmware
with BSD)

Microsoft's Broadband Networking hardware is only supported on Windows
operating systems. You're on your own otherwise.

How come windows sucks so much?
Why doesnt it register stuff when i change it?
I think getting a new router will save me the memories of
the suckfest that is windows!

Hmmm. Windows doesn't sucks "so much". I wouldn't
characterize my experience, or that of millions of WinXP
users, as a "suckfest". Disappointing sometimes, leading
to confusion at other times. But overall, a successful,
useable, and accessible OS. Even for the technically-
challenged.

I wouldn't tell people now (like I did 5 years ago) to
try dual OS via LILO MBR select. I won't tell them today
that the freedom to choose a separate Windows Manager and
separate Desktop is a "really important option". Or that
Star Office Suite for Linux is anywhere comparable to
Windows Office for WinXP Pro. The reality - it isn't.

So, be cool. Don't dis Windows with profanity and I won't
step on your ___ penguin.

Why you don't set a nix computer as firewall? Computers
these days are not expensive anymore, and a old computer
will do just fine (add a bunch of ethernet cards). That
way you get full control over the thing and it's
security... You can then even install whatever OS you
want :-)
