I have the MS-500 basestation wired to win98 PC. Also I
have the wireless setup on an WINXP machine.

My internet speeds are as follows for the wired pc
2004-04-07 11:25:57 EST: 39 / 336
Your download speed : 40498 bps, or 39 kbps.
A 4.9 KB/sec transfer rate.

MY question is what ports should I open to allow traffic
in when I'm downloading or surfing the interent? I have
no problem sending e-mails with large files. My problem
is receiving as its very slow on the interent.

Do I have to setup port forwarding? If so do I need upd
and tcp? If so to what ports?

Any assistance you can provide will help me out.

Thanks

Mike

If the XP works at full speed, the 98 should too. What
software are you using. If it's IE, then must be a
configuration issue in Win98 (look at the Network
Properties). If the problem only appears with certain
software, then check that software instructions -- it
should tell you if it needs ports open or not.

Finally check that the problem is not because of a slow
server or slow network connectivity. Open a DOS Window
and enter tracert followed by the domain name (or IP)
that you are accessing. Look at response times (it should
be in 100's in general). Try with known web sites such as
microsoft.com or cnn.com, and compare.

Run a virus check on the system for trojans. You may have
a trojan eating your bandwidth on the 98.

I have the problem with both PCs. I suspect the NAT is
blocking the incoming tranmissions with major delays. My
problem sending is not an issue. I have no problem at all
as everything so quickly.

Do I not have to open ports commond internet ports inbound
while having my firewall up for the interent?
