This question isn't for me for a change (!) - although it was one of the
referrals I sent to Pipex before they went to shit, and is now getting
the hell out of there...

They've got a BT phone line
They've been with Pipex for longer than the 12 month contract
They've just had CableTV installed
They ported their number from BT over to Telewest
They want to get their broadband from Telewest now

Would they:

a) need a MAC code
b) given that their number has been ported, will it have a marker on the
old (uncancelled as yet) Pipex fed BT line that might cause problems?
c) any other gotchas ?

TIA :-)

I could be wrong but don't think you need a MAC for Virgin broadband, as the
broadband is not down your telephone line.

This is correct on both points.

Cable broadband is not over the phone line it is down the same co-ax
used for TV. This is why many people on cable broadband have dumped the
expensive landline (cable are much dearer than even BT) and use VoIP via
an ATA.

No MAC is required as cable broadband isn't over a BT phone line, it
isn't over any phone line.

As I thought then, but I wasn't sure if the issue of them porting their
number from BT might have caused a problem.

Thanks guys :-)

It will cause an issue in "n" days time when the ADSL cease order is
processed - the ADSL cease order is automatic when the BT line is
ceased.

You are correct as they want TW.
But Virgin do broadband over ADSL as well as cable.
You will have to be careful with what advice you give out as its bound to be
an ADSL user you confuse.

VM do do ADSL, however the OPs question was with regard to a cable
connection.
