I can only update the firmware or save the configuration
via the broadband management utility on the system
attached to port 1. the option is greyed out on other
systems and the firmware update fails. is this the way
its supposed to be? is only port 1 the management port?

Any port should work, but for some reason the option gets
greyed on some computers. I never use the BNU, since it's
not necessary to run the network (I just remove it from
Start/Programs/startup).

To backup settings run IE and go to 192.168.2.1

You need to upgrade the MN700 firmware only from one of the
computers. The others only need an upgrade to the MBNU (and
maybe card drivers). If you need to upgrade from one of the
systems with the option greyed, once the install software
expands on the temporary directory, leaqve the install
pending, and install the firmware manually from the router
using IE.
