I'd rethink that approach, regarding your electricity bill.
200-300GB IDE disks aren't that expensive, with a bunch of them in
1-3 boxes, you'd have lots of storage.

Shouldn't be that difficult using lvm and some network block
device like Peter's ENBD, search freshmeat.net for "ENBD".
