I'm just finishing off installing software on my daughter's pc, at my
home, but her old ntlworld username and password fail. I am assuming
virginnet don't allow login for pop other than from their broadband
connections?

One month and one week after her 30 day trial and the 'phone went
mysteriously dead after a virgin engineer played with the green box
across the street. At least with BT you get calls diverted to a
mobile, virgin won't investigate for a week!

What do you mean by 'old'. The username from a dial-up account ? No, it won't
work with a new broadband account.

You want to collect mail ? Most ISPs don't worry about who you use to access it
but I can believe Virgin have chosen to be difficult.

Can you access the email account from
http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/emailgateway.php

If so, then I guess the must be blocking it from other providers!

I get "Please select the last part of your email address from this
list (you know, the bit after the @). This will send you to the right
place to pick up your mail." Then it takes me to the webmail site. I
was looking to download via pop3 from a site other than where the
cable modem is.

Can you actually log in using this - if so, then your account is OK, and you
have the correct details :-)

If you can't access the mailbox with this, then you have a problem with the
username and password, not the fact they are blocking it.

....just tiring to rule that potential problem out you see...

Settings look OK it just returns an invalid username or password
response. Of course it could just be that VM won't accept connections
from e-mail clients other than OE ;-)

As it accepts a logon with the same username and password for webmail
it looks like they are simply blocking pop3 access outside of their
cable modems.
