Poor reception at point blank range between MN-700 and MN-720

I'm trying to diagnose why my MN-700 (MSFT's new 802.11g
base station) paired with an MN-720 (802.11g notebook
adapter) gives low signal strength and poor data rate
(2Mbps) at point blank range (~3ft.). Reception only
gets worse the further away I go.

I'm not overlapping with any neighbors' wireless networks
(as far as I can tell).
I've tried different encryption methods (128b WEP and
256b WPA-PSK).
I've tried every channel (1 to 11), some give slightly
better results, but none totally makes it work like I'd
expect point blank.
I've turned off the 2.4GHz cordless phones (no effect).
The microwave isn't running.
I don't think my house walls are lined with lead.
I've turned off extra computers (and none have a CPU
frequency near 2.4GHz).

There's gotta be something I'm missing, or perhaps my
base station antenna is bad?

Are you using ad hoc mode rather than infrastructure mode?

Stewart.

No, I don't think so. I didn't know the MN-700 base
station would do anything but infrastructure mode.

I've also tried various encryption methods (WPA, WEP, and
none) to no avail.

I've yet to try using it in access point mode, but that's
the next step.
