No backup gens again, you would think their previous mistakes would
have had this sorted!

It's called a 'single point failure'. Poor planning.

Claranet/Netscalibur also affected.

Very full information on their status page as well.

Certainly not just Plusnet.

It seems to have been a problem on one phase and probably after the
generator input so there is noting anyone can do apart from having a
totally duplicate distribution all the way to teh servers - a
maintenance nightmare just to cover a rare (hopefully) fault.

Years ago I was working on systems that had power generation and
distribution triplicated. Now some services consider simple
duplication to be too expensive.

Quote from Telehouse's website:
http://www.telehouse.net/
"Customers housing equipment at a TELEHOUSE Europe site enjoy all the
advantages of power resilience, temperature control, fire detection systems
and state of the art physical security systems, but at a reduced cost to
setting up and monitoring a facility themselves. TELEHOUSE Europe houses
most of the world's major providers giving customers greater choice and
flexibility."

Some power resilience!

Telehouse, by the way, is an independent, world-wide, Japanese-owned
company, providing ISPs with building space and security facilities for
their equipment. Plusnet is just one of their (presumably many) customers.
