Plusnet usage allowance

When you subscribe to a plusnet package with a monthly gigabyte
allowance does this allow you to use peer to peer and newsgroups or do
you have to subscribe to the premier packages to get peer to peer and
newsgroups. If one does choose the lite package over the premier can
you see how much data you have transferred since you have last been
billied?

Thanks in advance

du.

peer to peer = Yes
newsgroups = Yes
real time usage = yes

I've just gone over my 1Gb allowance for the 1st time this month, thus just
had a mail that as long as my usage is below 2Gb for whole month, next
months bill will be an extra £1.90, making it £16.89

Just be aware though (my current pet hate about PlusNet) that they use
some new fangled SI definition of a GB rather than the "normal"
computing definition ie

1GB = 1 * 10^9 Bytes
1GiB = 1 * 2^32 Bytes (the usually measure in computing except for hard
disk size)

Basically downloading a file of about 950MB (as shown by Windows, Unix
etc) will blow a PlusNet 1GB allowance

Yes, PlusNet have a web page that shows you your stats. Bear in mind though that
the allowance includes both outgoing and incoming traffic. So make sure you are
trojan/virus free, maybe also set up your mail client to only download emails
below a certain size.

Here are my stats for the last few months:
Aug-Sep 0.89GB
Jul-Aug 56.39GB
Jun-Jul 7.7GB

So you can see that a restricted account wouldn't be any use for me!

I have just switched to 1Mb/s service with the 1Gb limit, and so I have been
watching my daily usage.
I note that the router status page reports 'TX Blocks and RX Blocks' which
keep counting even when the computer is idle with no browser or email
programs open.
What's more I think it keeps counting even when the computer is turned off.
Is this using up my bandwidth limit ?
It would be a pain having to turn the router off (wifi in the loft).
Regards,
Martin

My router does this too, if we are away and computers are off, the 'noise'
only amounts to about 1Mb per day which isn't too much in the whole scheme
of things

Is it more if the computers are on, but idle ?
Either way 30Mb might be useful at the end of a month.

Martin

Ha! I wish. Actually the high figures were when I got a bit bored working from
home. The Aug-Sep includes my holiday which is why it is low.

Yes, this is correct. Your router is receiving data all the time, sometimes
massively (well relatively as it is just packets rather than megabytes) as
trojaned computers run automated attacks against your network (IP addresses
chosen at random). It may also respond in various ways hence the outgoing data.

So if you are near your limit, or think you may get close to it in a month,
switch the router off when you don't need it.
