Plusnet starter packs

Hi,

I am setting up a friend on Plusnet broadband, and want to get him a
starter pack. I am going to try and persuade him to go with the
router, as he can then add a WAP or his laptop to the system (his
laptop has built-in wireless). However, just wondering what the
quality was like of both the USB modem and the router? The Solwise
routers do seem to get a good reputation, but not heard anything about
the modems used. Are the modems using the host processor to do all
the work, etc?

Andrew (Who is currently on ISDN and can't wait to get back with Plus
for Broadband in the summer of next year).

There is nothing wrong with the SAR130 other than it was still one rev of
firmware behind the SAR110 last time I looked.

I think it's only £15 more for the router, it's a no-brainer.

Josey.
(Plusnet/SAR110).

I wouldn't bother to buy *any* hardware from PlusNet - I'd buy a wireless
router from elsewhere, rather than a wired router now and a WAP later. As
far as I know, PlusNet don't supply wireless routers - but there are plenty
to be had elsewhere.

Just curious why you're going down this route, when others are so
often recommending a wireless enabled router as a starting point,
and from past (but not recent checks) this may cost something
very similar to the (lesser) hardware supplied by an ISP.

PlusNet <http://tinyurl.com/24ymz> - I recommend them and save some cash.

I have a Robotics 9106 and I am pleased with it. Have not used the wireless
bit yet though.

I tried to persuade him to get this, especially with an offer on a
Vigor router I can get cheaply, but the issue is that he is not sure
what he wants now, so he wanted to expland later. I think he will
just end up with a USB modem, but I did want to try to get him
something better

That's a shame - you can get a perfectly decent wired 4 port ADSL router
for under 40 pounds now including VAT (even less if you don't want a
branded product).

I have! :-)

Works well in other areas of the house.

Bye for now.

Clive.
